+1. We did not get our son circumcised bc there was no reason to. He’s now 8 and we are still happy w that choice. That said, I’m sure it also would’ve been fine if we had done it. In general I’m not a fan of unnecessary medical procedures but I understand that a lot of people think it’s a good thing to do and I don’t judge them for that. |
And look at you, the model of civility equating low iq with barbarity! |
If you’re not Jewish you almost certainly have not attended a Bris. Only .2% of the worlds population is Jewish so majority of people have likely not been to a Bris. |
I was a military attorney, and I am still haunted by the 19 year old who had the unit medic "circumcise" him while deployed overseas because he was embarrassed (and deployed). The kid had to be MEDEVACed, and we disciplined the person who did the "cutting." Although the person who did it was only minimally in trouble as he did it on the request of the 19 year old. I am not a troll. My son, born after this, is circumcised. |
I don’t get it |
A 19 year old kid wanted to be circumcised so badly he allowed his buddy to try to do the procedure. |
I didn't read much of the previous nine pages, but I have heard enough stories about boys who had to be circumcized when they were older because of painful conditions. I gladly had all three of my boys circumcized when they were born and, honestly, they are quite happy not to have to undergo the procedure at an age when they would have had a painful recovery.
I'd also like to add that circumcized men are far less likely to contract STDs including HIV. |
Non American, non religious family. It never crossed my mind to circumcise my 2 boys (and I honestly don't remember being asked about the option when I delivered them here) and ten years later, I never even think about it. All is good.
This hygiene problem that often comes up- is it a unique American issue? How is it that girls are automatically expected to keep their parts clean, and we just accept that boys will be boys and probably will not be able to clean themselves properly?? Anatomically they are not that different with folds and all.. |
In some areas, grown men are rushing to be circumcised to reduce their risks.
"Male circumcision can reduce a male’s chances of acquiring HIV by 50% to 60% during heterosexual contact with female partners with HIV, according to data from three clinical trials. Circumcised men compared with uncircumcised men have also been shown in clinical trials to be less likely to acquire new infections with syphilis (by 42%), genital ulcer disease (by 48%), genital herpes (by 28% to 45%), and high-risk strains of human papillomavirus associated with cancer (by 24% to 47% percent)." https://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/newsroom/fact-sheets/hiv/male-circumcision-HIV-prevention-factsheet.html#:~:text=Health%20benefits%3A%20Male%20circumcision%20can,data%20from%20three%20clinical%20trials. Oh, and my sons are circumcised. No issues. |
From the same paper While the benefits of circumcision can be high for males without HIV who engage in behaviors that may increase their chances of getting HIV, the overall public health benefit for the entire U.S. population may be limited due to the lack of definitively proven benefits among HIV transmission categories at a national level, including male-to-male sexual contact and heterosexual contact. |
Exactly!! |
I am a surgeon. In med school when I saw the procedure being done, I vowed I not only never, ever do that to my boys, not participate in it indirectly.
Circumcision is male genital mutilation. It is interesting that we in the US criticize other cultures for female genital mutilation and we do it ourselves to our boys. The research has not played out to show a benefit to doing this at a population level. If a man engages in high risk sexual behaviors where the procedure might be beneficial, he could get the procedure himself at his own decision. I will support my sons in this regard if needed. |
*yikes pls excuse typos |
Didn’t circumcise and happy with choice. |
Not American and never considered circumcising my boys. |
