Outdoor rug for deck

Anonymous
I want to get an outdoor rug for our deck. The rug will be completely exposed to the elements. If you have an outdoor rug, what do you do when it rains? Do I need to bring it in? Or if I leave it out, does it stay damp for long? I realize different fabrics will be better than others. Tips in that department?

Anyone BTDT?

Poylpropylene rug Very common. Leave it out. You can rinse with a hose if needed. They dry quickly.

We got a rug on wayfair last year. We left it exposed and it got disgusting over two years despite hosing it off now and then. It's also not something I can easily put in our washing machine as the material is thick and doesn't ball up.

For my next rug, I want one of the ruggable outdoor rugs so I can actually put it in the washing machine

Sorry, got off wayfair two years ago (tossed after last summer)

I wouldn’t leave any rug continuously outside on a wood deck. Even if it’s propylene, the underside will take a long time to dry out when it rains.

I don’t know about leaving it on a wood deck, but look for a polypropylene rug that is woven without any kind of rubber backing. The reason is that if it’s all polypropylene, you can periodically take it onto some concrete and clean it with regular bleach (if it’s polypropylene it doesn’t matter what color it is). If it has a rubber backing, the bleach might damage that. Being able to bleach it is essential imo because of how pollen-y and mildew-y it is here and for regular dirt.
