Harnessed seat for big kid

Anonymous
We're taking a trip to Maine and my SIL told us that children under 55 lbs have to ride in a harnessed car seat by state law. DS, 7, is 50 lbs and has been in a booster seat for almost 2 years. Does anyone have a recommendation for a harnessed car seat?

Doesn't answer question but might save you some time/effort-how tall is your DS, ie are they taller than the height requirement for a regular car seat? See bolded portion below:

2-B. Children 2 years of age or older and weighing less than 55 pounds. When a child who is 2 years of age or older and who weighs less than 55 pounds is being transported in a motor vehicle that is required by the United States Department of Transportation to be equipped with seat belts, the operator shall ensure that the child is properly secured in a child restraint system with an internal harness in accordance with the child restraint system manufacturer's instructions and the vehicle manufacturer's instructions except that, if the child exceeds the child restraint system manufacturer's recommended height limit for the child restraint system, the operator shall ensure that the child is properly secured in a federally approved belt positioning seat.

Are you going to keep using the 5 point seat or just when in Maine?

I guarantee you no Officer is pulling you over, weighing your kid, and giving you a ticket for a 7yo not in a harness. Just use the booster..

No, Maine law has changed from 40 pounds to 55 pounds. Kids up to some age, can’t remember, have to ride in the rear too.

We have a Britax clicktight that’s harnessed. My 6yo, 50lbs DS uses it. I forget what it’s called. Look it up on their website.0

I don’t care what the state law is I wouldn’t do it. I agree with the poster above, no one is going to give you a ticket for having a 50 lb kid in a high back booster.

My 9 year old is 52 lbs. He's been in a low back booster for years. Seems like it's fine, according to the new law.

Here is the new Maine law:
Violation of this subsection is a traffic infraction for which a fine of $50 for the first offense, $125 for the 2nd offense and $250 for the 3rd and subsequent offenses must be imposed. A fine imposed under this subsection may not be suspended by the court.

OP don’t buy a harnessed seat for this. Also for those saying their kids are still harnessed, check their torso
Height/ear height. We have gone through so many seats and my kids always maxed out that before the weight limit for the seat

No one is going to know that your 50lb child is not 55lbs. No one is going to pull you over and weigh your child.
