Brown or black?
Could someone run down the no-no traditional business attire color combos (eg black suit with brown shoes)? Signed, clueless |
| Black or blue. |
| yellow or green |
| Pewter. Goes with everything. |

Nude.. I currently wear these with all of my blue work outfits

| Black. Blue is too "matchy-matchy" to quote Mr. Michael Kors. |
These are too light to go with midnight blue. Dark brown Black with blue has always been a no-no. |
| Dark gray would be elegant. |

I don't think black patent is such a no-no, especially if it has a bauble on the vamp. A print would work, too! Either an understated snake, or a print like these: http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/shoes/ballets/PRDOVR~10639/10639.jsp

I disagree, I think those are great shoes to go with midnight blue (I'm picturing pants, though, if that makes a difference). |

Brown shoes with blue outfits is a no-no in some countries/cultures and acceptable/standard in other. Black can look like you weren't sure if your suit was blue or black, and raises the question of what color tights/hose in the winter. I think the traditional answer to the question would be oxblood (burgundy) or navy.
Nude (to match your skin tone, not necessarily light tan) is always an option, particularly in the warmer months, and will help elongate your legs (never a bad thing). The Kate Spade example would work well for some people. I just bought a similar pair of Cole Haan's. Gray or pewter could be beautiful, maybe even in a snakeskin. A soft gold, if your office isn't too buttoned down. A bright color like yellow or orange would be great, but has to be worn with confidence. FWIW, I'm wearing a navy skirt with gray suede heels today. Would have worn the nude heels if the weather were nicer this morning. |

There are no rules anymore. This year, designers are putting browns and navies together. Traditionally, black shoes with blue suits.
Personally, I like a metallic shoe. Just make sure it is not too light for the suit. |

nude or not too shiny metallic.
I would also do a not too vampy red. |

What's the look you're going for? Is this professional? (What profession?) Do you want to look conservative and polished, or do you think something a little "unusual" is more your style?
Here are some options: For office wear, I recommend black shoes. If you're inclined toward brown, they should be deep dark bittersweet chocolate brown without any red or orange. If going out on the town, silver is a nice choice. Taupe also has classic appeal, but may be a tad too reminiscent of what an AVON saleslady might wear (IMO). |
