Diaper rash after potty training?

Anonymous
I just potty trained my 2 year old and about 2 weeks after she developed a diaper-like rash that doesn’t seem to want to go away. It’s on the outside (more like butt cheeks), not inside like usual. It’s almost like her skin is irritated from rubbing on her pants without a diaper on, but not sure that actually would happen.

Has anyone else experienced this? I have been using diaper cream at night when she wears a diaper still.

Why don’t you put her in underwear during the day?

Make sure she’s getting daily bath aIf she’s wetting the diaper at all at night.

Yeah, this is one of the things underwear is for…

This is OP - she wears underwear. It’s just thin so that was what I meant.

If it's on the outside, it's probably not related to potty training. maybe a reaction to lotion or a contact rash from getting overheated in her clothes during the day? I would treat it the way you'd treat a regular skin rash -- not with diaper cream. A little OTC hydrocortisone until it clears and then a good nourishing, fragrance and scent free lotion after bathing.

My guess is that the rash is unrelated to her being potty trained.

Look for the usual suspects: laundry soap, bath soap, lotion. Double rinse her underwear in the washing machine.

Maybe its the soap used ont eht pants. Or if the pants are not cotton.

Are you using proper actual 'overnight' diapers at nighttime?

As they get older, there's obviously more pee at nighttime usually (larger bladder) and 10-12 hrs a night in a wet diaper is a LONG time.

If she's still waking up with wet diapers, make sure you're using a large enough size diaper, remember larger size = more absorbency. And buy overnight diapers, as they do a better job of drawing in moisture for long periods of time.
