Need residential treatment center for my daughter after attempt

Anonymous
We are currently looking for a residential treatment center for my daughter. (17) She attempted suicide and needs a residential treatment at this point (she has done several IOP, PHP and in-patient stays already). Diagnosis is depression, anxiety and emotional dysfunction. Anybody familiar with Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program locations in VA and CT? We are also searching nationally but somehow having her close would make me feel better and insurance might be more willing to pay than out of state ones. I find very little information about these centers online right now (I am on FB groups already).

If you need insurance to pay, you may want to check to see if they have a list of providers. A lot of people like Rogers in Wisconsin.

My heart aches for so many young people and their families who are in crisis right now. Hugs to you, OP. It sounds like you’re doing the right thing before it’s too late at 18.

They are recommending things but it seems to be taking for ever. Right now I have the DMV list I am working with but half of their recs don't work. But they were the ones recommending the Discovery Center so I would like to try to find some testimonies about it. And yes, thank you for the tip about Rogers, we have applied and the waiting list is 4 months yuck!!!! Thank god our DD seems pretty stable right now and compliant.

Thank you that is very kind of you to say that. I needed to hear it! All the places are totally booked and their waiting lists are gigantic, and they release the kids ASAP because there is so much demand. The mental health crisis is huge right now, and especially with teens and preteens.

look at the FB Group WTRS - and get an educational consultant. Not all RTC are the same......Patti Murphy at Life Compass Partners and The School COunseling Group are two places to start. Many many hugs.

ECs tend not to work with insurance placements. An EC will run you $7500-$10k for the placement recommendation that will most likely be private pay only.

Am on the fb group already and contacted some EC among which Patti (never heard back) but it seems to be taking for ever and I am not sure I want to put in $5000 in a consultant since we probably have decent options in-network and lots of info online and on fb. The only piece I find hard right now is to get info about the local options.

PP here. One of the things I did was to use the online provider tool for my carrier and then change the zip Code so I could get a bigger list. It was so tedious and so much work to find a placement.

I hope your daughter is newly 17 so that age doesn’t become a factor. The waits are unbelievable. Three years ago and then again two years ago I sent my kid for residential and there were no waits at all.

lol agreed! I was thinking $5000... Anyway, yes, I will probably not go with an EC because of the cost.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Did you end up finding a good program in-network? My daughter is newly 17 yes, but even at 18 I think she would be willing to go. We have a good relationship and she understands it was a really bad decision.

+1
I’m so sorry, OP.

Have been collecting a list recently from DBT specialists. Have not had to go that route (yet). Here are the ones suggested: best (and expensive): Rogers - Minnesota, Silver Hill in CT, McLean in Boston. Others that may be in-network: The Midwest Center (Illinois?), Skyland Trails, Atlanta; Hillside; Timberline Knolls. I have not done due diligence on any of these, but the people giving me these names were very knowledgeable and astute clinicians. Hope you are able to find someplace soon.

I did find a good program and I believe they saved my kids life. Thing about turning 18 is that many programs transition kids to adult programs at that age. So maybe watch for the age issue in your search. The program we used kept kids until their 19th birthday but in my search that was unusual.

Rogers only has residential in Wisconsin. PHPs in several other locations. They are an in network provider for many insurance plans. We had an excellent experience with them. They do tend to have a long wait list.
