I've heard their quieter, and with gas increasing it may make sense.
Never had a EC though so it would be a big leap for us. |

I have a 2018 Model 3. I love it. The biggest issue we have had is body work after a car accident. Im Nova, there is really only one place that works on Teslas.
Quiet, smooth, safe, fun and fast. It is not a luxury car, but it has great features. The more luxury version is the S. We have a Tesla charging station installed in our garage so plug in a couple of times a week. For road trips so far, we have taken it to Rehoboth, the Outer Banks, Virginia Tech, and New York. We stopped and charged for Tech, NY, and NC while we ate and used the bathrooms. |
Amazing to drive. Too much fun to allow our teens to drive

We test drove the Y. DH has been all-in on getting one. I did not like the way it drove AT ALL. Apparently the jerkiness can be turned off (there is something in the braking that makes it more jerky if you want to increase milage). We didn't know you could turn it off, so I don't know what it feels like if it is off. But, given how it felt with the regenerative braking on, I was totally a "no."
The space inside was impressive for the Y. I didn't think it would be as spacious as it turned out to be. I also did not like how you have to use the touch screen to do anything (like change the ventilation or music). That seemed dangerous to me. In addition, it just felt like too much of a departure from what you have always known about a dashboard. There is nothing at all in the dash. I felt like it would take a lot of mental energy/distraction to get used to driving it. I'm curious how Tesla owners are feeling about driving it in the snow. The sales guy said that it wasn't very good in the snow. In theory, I like the idea of an EV. But, I have a lot of concerns about a car that is so expensive when other suitable vehicles are available at a lower price (i.e. why buy a stake if a hamburger will satisfy your hunger?). I feel more comfortable with the idea of the RAV4 prime -- which would give EV for most trips, but still allow for longer range with gas engine. I also worry about DH owning a "Tesla" (ooh la la), and having the mindset that he can't haul X or do Y with his car (i.e. drive in the rain or snow) because he has to baby the expensive machine. Lastly, I've come to realize that Musk is a huge jackass and mysogynist.... and runs his company like a 14 yr old. So, I have a hard time wanting to support him. DH is a space nut, so he is all about supporting the space exploration of Musk's company. Oops! This is actually my last concern: FIRES. My DD sleeps above our garage. I worry about a Tesla fire burning our house down and killing her. I know it's remote. But, Teslas do catch fire and they are nearly impossible to stop when they start. So, I don't want the Tesla in our garage should DH get one. And that's going to be a problem, b/c we always keep our cars in the garage. Just some things to think about. |
| Tesla just recalled half the cars it’s ever sold in America for serious safety issues. |

16:08 here again.... just reading my WashPost and saw a relevant article on a topic I didn't mention. When we test drove the Y, the sales guy did mention that you could lose a significant portion of your charge if you left your Tesla at the airport parking lot in the cold weather. You could come back from your trip and not have a charge (or not enough to get home). Well, I'm sure you heard about the nightmare on I-95 this week with the snow --- think about being stuck in a traffic jam for 20-30 hrs with an EV...probably not a good situation.

No it hasn't. The current recall is wiring in the backup camera. |
I feel like you are really stretching here. Everybody ran out of gas on i-95. That's why it took so long to clear so many cars. Also, what are the odds of a rare event happening like this? As for the regenerative braking.. at first it feels a little bit like shifting until you get used to it and learn the points where it's more jerky. But it's a great feature. Fires... Again. The odds are so slim that it's going to spontaneously catch on fire. The benefits of an Eevee far outweigh the se bizarre rare costs. As far as Elon musk, yeah he's an idiot. But Tesla and Ford and all the other companies pushing EVs are doing a service. Bezos is a real jackass too, but I imagine you still order from Amazon. |
| This is interesting. Thanks everyone, I'll have to test drive the 2 models I'm interested in. It does seem weird everything is touch screen, but maybe we'll end up renting one first to see if we would want to invest in one. I do think it's going to be the norm in the future, and better for the environment. |

We have both a 3 and a Y, and we had an X for four years before these. In my opinion these are the best cars on the road. I have no idea what the jerkiness is that a pp is talking about. I've never experienced it in the seven years we've owned Teslas. All of the other concerns mentioned are very very remote chances of happening. The only maintenance we do is put air in the tires every now and then and add windshield wiper fluid as needed!
Seriously - just get one. They drive like a dream and you'll never drive an ICE car again. |
Our experience as well. We have had an X for about 3 years and a Y for over a year. No maintenance at all. They have many great features, but their best feature is their ability to “evolve”. Tesla regularly does software upgrades which improve the driving experience, so the car today is better than the car you purchased. |

Internal combustion engine - a regular gas powered car. |
