Columbia Heights at Night

Anonymous
I need to come into DC next week and am looking at a VRBO condo in Columbia Heights. Though I used to live in DC (Dupont Circle), I don't really know the Columbia Heights area. Could anybody give me some feedback on whether the whole neighborhood is safe for walking to and from Metro at night or do I need to be careful about the address?

I live in CH and it's pretty block-to-block. I always take a cab after 11pm; otherwise I take metro and walk the four blocks home. There are parts of CH I don't go after dark, at all. Where's the property? I can probably tell you how shady it gets and at what time.

OP: I don't have an actual address yet - am waiting for the owner to get back to me.

OP Again: It looks as though the condo is between Monroe and Otis Pl, either on 11th St or 12th St.

Hmm... iffy. I've heard of muggings on that stretch of 11th street north of Red Rocks (the pizza place at 11th and Park). Of course, there are a lot of asshats stumbling home drunk from Wonderland Ballroom up that street, presenting easy targets. Nonetheless, if it were me, I would limit my walking-from-the-metro hours to daylight, maybe as late as 9pm. You'll be totally fine around there during the day. By the way, there is no 12th street there-- 12th Ts into Florida Avenue, half a mile to the south.

OP Back. Thanks for the feedback - that is really helpful. Perhaps I need to think about a different location if I can find one. Sorry about the 12th St thing - on the map, it looked as though there was a road between 11th and 13th, but there was no street name on the map. If I do want to try that location, would I get a cab from the Metro or would that be ridiculous from such a close location?

What time of night are you talking about?

Not too late, maybe 9-10 pm. If it were later, I would probably just be taking a cab for the whole trip.

I work in Columbia Heights on 13 and Harvard. Daytime=no problem and actually quite pleasant. At night, it gets sketchy. But, having lived in Georgetown, Mount Pleasant and NE I can say along with anyone else with sense...you shouldn't be walking ANYWHERE at night alone. CH is very livable and the block you mentioned is close the the grocery store, metro, Tivoli square convenience. Good luck OP
