Good school district in MoCo that is affordable for parents working for federal gov

Anonymous
Where do federal governement workers live in MoCo, who have kids in a good school district?
Kensington? Grovesnor?
Do they take the metro or do they drive to work?
DH is considering a career move to the federal government, and we are looking for a good school district.
We couldn't afford to live in Bethesda, but is there a good school district somewhere that is convenient enough to commute to DC?
Thanks in advance!

Depends alot on what you are willing your commute to be, but I think many live in Kensington Parkwood/WJ cluster, Rosemary Hills/BCC cluster, Woodside/Downcounty Consortium cluster, and Takoma Park/Downcounty Consortium. WJ and BCC are roughly equal in status, Downcounty has its detractors and boosters. From all of these clusters you can drive to a metro and take metro in. For Kensington-Parkwood, you could walk to Marc train and take it in to Union Station (or drive to Grovesnor Metro).

I live in Chevy Chase. I drive and take the Metro. When I take the Metro I take the ride on bus to Friendship Heights. There are houses in CC for sale righ now that are listed for less than $900k.

What I meant is that, generally speaking, people include WJ and BCC in the same "ranking" or what not - quibble if you will about which is better, but neither is considered a bad school ,or even a middling school. I was not using status to mean some sort of social status indicator.

If Bethesda is too expensive, I'm guessing OP is looking for something priced lower than $900k!

I work for a fed in College Park area. Most younger people here (late 20s and 30s) who are two career fed families live in Rockville, Gaithersburg or even further out. The people I know who live in closer in areas are all older with older kids, and I assume they bought before housing prices went nuts. Two GS-11/12s or even 13/14s will have a hard time buying a 900K house.

There are houses in K-P, Rosemary Hills for under 600K.

Thanks for all the info. Yeah...$900k is definitely not affordale for us (sigh...).
We are in mid-30s with two young children.
We will aim for Kensington and north.
MoCo is sooo much more expensive than VA in terms of housing, child care cost, even school AC cost!! (But we like it here in MoCo :shock

Also try Takoma Park. Most people love Takoma Park Elementary and Middle School and while Blair doesn't have the reputation of BCC, Whitman and WJ it does have several great programs. Lots of houses here under $550 K - easy Red Line commute to downtown and lots and lots of house within walking distance of Metro. Tons of playgrounds, tons of young families, great community all around.

I'm a fed in a single income situation. I live in the 20878 zip code. houses are beautiful and in the 550-650 range. Whooten school district. I drive 10 minutes to shady grove metro. my stop is on the red line. It's really a good place for us - very rural, quiet, safe, but lots of families.

I'm a single mother eager to live near Somerset Elementary School. I was thinking of moving to one of those Soviet-style condominiums right near the Friendship Heights Metro--the Willoughby is the cheapest, I think (2 bedrooms for about $450,000); there's also the Elizabeth and the Irene.
Two problems (at least):
1. I don't see a lot of kids or kid-friendly things (playgrounds) in the vicinity or in those buildings. I could be wrong--I'm just starting my search.
2. It's LONG walking distance to Somerset for little legs. I do believe in walking to elementary school, but where can we live that's near Somerset? I can't afford the lovely homes near the school.

Any guidance appreciated. I don't mind condo living (I lived in NYC for many years), but we need a few kids to play with!
