Would appreciate honest feedback. We are thinking of moving out there. Our kids are not yet in school yet. |
There is no such thing as a Gaithersburg public school system - Gaithersburg is part of the Montgomery County, Maryland school system (google that). You can get info about G'burg schools at the MCPS website. |
The Gaithersburg HS Cluster is not good, the Quince Orchard Cluster is better....there are elementary schools like Travilah and Stone Mill that are also quite good. Stay far away from any schools in Montgomery Village! |
PP- do you have any experience with the schools in the Gaithersburg HS cluster? Just curious as we did hear the same thing from someone else but didn't have their child in there. Also, are you just talking specifically about the high school or the elementary schools/middle school that feed into it? |
PP here-I work with all the HS's in the Gaithersburg area and know which are better than others. |
I will echo that Stone Mill is very good. |
I haven't had any problems with Watkins Mill High. It's been great. I think that as long as parents show interest and become active in their kids education any school will work. I'm sure that I'm a real pain in the butt with my kids teachers but they know that I know what's going on with grades and assignments in every class and they can contact me if there's a problem. I communicate weekly with all of them and will continue to do so until graduation day - June 2012.

We just bought a new home in Gaithersburg and had some concerns about schools, but did a lot of research and feel comfortable with our decision. Gaithersburg HS has a bad reputation, but as a PP said, Quince Orchard is better. (Not the best in MoCo, but pretty good). That's the cluster we are in. We will be going to Brown Station for ES. This was our primary concern. But we've spent a lot of time driving around, talking to neighbors, looking at test scores, etc. and we are convinced it is now ok for ES. Hope that helps! |
It is, but it's in North Potomac and the Wootten cluster. Nothing to do with Gaithersburg. |
When you look in a mirror, is a helicopter your reflection? |
OMG Do you plan to do this when they go to college? If not, how will they cope (seriously), never having done the school thing without your intervention? |
To the poster who commented on staying away from Montgomery Village - do you have any actual experience in these schools?
To the Watkins Mill poster - what about MV Middle School? We're local to Whetstone Elementary and I've heard positive things about the school from others in the community, but I am concerned with MVMS and HS. This is years away so its probably silly of me to be worried now but at this point it does not look like we'll be able to relocate any time soon. |
North Potomac IS Gaithersburg. So yes, some of Gaithersburg is zoned for Wooton. |
I would also like to hear more about the PP's experience with schools in Montgomery Village - unless your children attend one of those schools, how can you make such a blanket statement? My experience has been fine - yes, the schools may be a little more diverse, both racially and socioeconomically, then schools closer to the North Potomac side of Gaithersburg, however, in my experience, the teachers, parents and students are all very dedicated. |
Nope Edline is. |
