5yo and canker sore - can't eat!

Anonymous
My 5yo has a canker sore and he cries in pain every time he tries to eat! I got him a numbing gel like Orajel, applied it, and he screamed and cried for over 15 minutes, so I'm thinking there is no chance he'll let me reapply. This has been going on for about a week, including at school. His lunch is coming back uneaten. I can get calories in him with milk. I was just wondering if anyone else has been through this and has any tips. It's really over the top, but he's not generally all that sensitive to pain, so I believe that he's really in pain!

Liquid ibuprofen, ice area with a popsicle, swish mouth with Maalox or Milk of Magnesia to neutralize acid. Avoid spicey or acidic foods, and anything with sharp edges (crackers, pizza crust, edges of lasagna, etc.).

Cold things often feel better.

There are several peroxyl mouthwash that you can buy where you can just swish and spit.

We use the Colgate Perioxyl Mouth Sore, but there are others. Swish and rinse 3x/day. Feel better immediately and shrivels up the sore within 24hrs.
CVS and grocery stores have them.

Thank you! I don't know how I didn't see this suggested in my googling. The articles I read all said "it will go away in 2 weeks" but one week of this is enough!

There is a product called Canker Cover that is a little gel blob that sticks on top. There's also an anesthetic throat spray. But I don't know if those things are approved for kids.

Some people swear by alum, like in the spice section of the grocery store.

Just give your kid a heads-up that the sore will tingle (maybe even hurt), but it's just for moment and it's part of the healing process. And if he can just swish the peryoxl mouthwash around for 30 sec it will feel so much better right away.

My Dd gets these on her inner lip near her gum line or sometimes on the side of her tongue .

NP. This was my grandmother's solution for them when I was a kid. Warm salt water. Worked like a charm.

I had one recently and for first time did the salt water and it was done before I could think about it again.

I think iron deficiency and b12 deficiency can cause this. My kid used to get them before we started supplementing with kids liquid iron (we knew from doctor visit he had an iron deficiency). I also give him twin lab b12 dots.

You can also make a mix of liquid Benadryl and maalox and have him swish and spit. It doesn't taste great but it doesn't sting like orajel.

Chloraseptic throat spray works really well. Also, try switching toothpastes. I always got canker sores and then a new dentist told me to try different toothpastes and i
