Chevy Chase Elementary Highly Gifted Center - What do you like or dislike about the program?

Anonymous
We are considering sending our child to the Chevy Chase Elementary Highly Gifted Center for 4th and 5th grade. If you have a child that has attended the program I would appreciate hearing what you liked and/or disliked? Thanks in advance.

Has your child already been accepted to the program? or are you considering applying for the program in the future?

Our child has been offered a spot for the fall. We are going to the open house on Friday. I've spoken with a few parents from our home school who have children there and they love it, but would welcome other insights and perspectives.

We turned down a spot at the GT Program at Chevy Chase b/c our DC did not want to leave friends at current school. Our DC has ended up completely bored academically by staying at our current ES. We wish that we had tried the GT Program.

They give a big speech at the open house about making sure the child really wants to go and is not being forced to attend the program. But sometimes I think that 3rd graders are not able to see the different opportunities that exist in a new environment.

We did not force our DC to go, but a few times during the year, our DC has said, "I should have gone to the GT Program"

If your DC has an interest in going, you should go for it!

We have a child in the program and love it. One thing that I really like is that, although the classes are separate, it is not treated as a school w/i school program. The kids are mixed up with other kids from their grade for all specials like art, music, pe, etc. This way kids get to know other kids outside the GT program.

Sometimes children leave the program - you could contact the Center and ask if he could be considered for fifth-grade admission.

Our child was just admitted and one of his friends was as well but the friend's parents are on the fence. I wish I could send them your post - I think based on what I know about their son that if they don't send him, it will be a big mistake. (I can't say anything, of course; it's none of my business.)

At this point, I am sure my DC will not want to join in at the 5th grade - but I guess it would be interesting to find out if they would even consider re-admitting someone at the 5th grade.

The main reason my DC did not want to go to the GT Center was b/c DC's good friend did not make it in. DC probably would have gone, if a friend could have gone too. It would be nice for your son and his friend to go together, but like you said, not your business...

On the plus side, managing homework is a breeze this year!
