Rip Van Winkle 10 year

Anonymous
Does anyone happen to know where I can find a bottle of Rip Van Winkle in the DMV that's not insanely overinflated priced?

Isn’t the point of it to be insanely overpriced?

If you are in DC I’d check to see if you can find it online for mailorder.

actually depending on the age of the bottle the OP is looking for rip van winkle is correct.

Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year
Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year
Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Year
Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year
Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year
Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year

FYI they only produce about 84000 bottles a year. jim beam produced upwards of 80 million... so very small batch, plus they have to sit on the barrels for so long... to age.

The only way to get a bottle at MSRP is to enter one of the lotteries (MoCo + VA ABCs both have them) or be very close personal friends with the owner of a liquor megastore.

There is literally no other way. If there was, the lotteries wouldn't need to exist.

This is the right answer. A couple years ago, a liquor store in MoCo was selling them on a first come, first served basis - I think they had 80. The store opened at 10 am; I got there at 4, and was something like number 58 in line. Anyone who got there after 4:30 missed out.

Also, what do you consider "insanely overpriced?" It's silly to compare the price to the retail, because it's so difficult to get. If you see a bottle for $300, you should buy it immediately.

FWIW, I've had all of them (over time), and the best ones aren't necessarily the oldest/most expensive (at least the years I tried).

Yes. The only person I know who gets a bottle of this here or there is friends with the liquor store owner. He has a list of loyal customers he cycles through to offer them a bottle when he gets a shipment. It's a smart way to keep customers loyal to his shop.

I have a bottle of Rip 10 year I got in the spring through the MOCO lottery. I will sell it to you, but I think the going rate is like $1200.

This is how it worked when we lived in IL/MO, too.

Oh awesome. Thank you! I love finding out why I’m wrong. (For real it’s fun to make mistakes.) Good info.
