Updating my makeup for my 40s

Anonymous
I am in my 40s and have always been fairly low key on makeup however I need to step up my game. I have pretty normal skin, not overly dry or prone to breakouts. Right now I wear Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer most days and that is it. I am still pretty wrinkle free but my skin just looks rougher and duller than it used to and I feel like tinted moisturizer alone is no longer doing the job but I am not sure what I should invest in.

Should I up my skin care routine (cleansers, toners, serums) buy a more substantial foundation or add a step like pressed or loose powder?? In the past (when I had an event) I have gone to the dept store been matched with a foundation formula only to use it once or twice and have it to sit in my make-up bag until I toss it bc its expired.

Fondation is aging. If you don't have anything to cover, don't do it.

Stick with the Laura Mercier if it agrees with you. I would add a couple drops liquid highlighter to T zone and cheek bones. Glossier future dew is nice.

Up your cheek color game. Get a stain or cream brush. That will REALLY make you look more vibrant and alive. A sheer lip color too.

And attend to your brows. Keep them filled in and groomed.

Get your makeup professionally done, as though you're going to an event (not at a makeup counter). Talk to the artist. I just got mine done saturday for vanity's sake - first time out since the pandemic - and got great tips and advice.

I am going to switch out my facial cleanser, get better brushes, and change the order of my makeup application. And the MUA didn't sell me anything - I just picked her brain.

Where did you go?

Go to a dermatologist and get on a retinol regimen. It has done wonders for my skin, which looks dewy now.

I just got a light chemical peel and am going to do a medium one in about a week. My friend had one last year and she said her skin looked amazing after for like 6 months. I find that foundation makes me look older. I really only wear lipstick and sunscreen on a daily basis. But I also do Botox.

This. You most likely don't need to change your makeup routine yet, but need to up your skin care regimin.

Change your skin care regimen first- I am 48 so use Blue Mercury M-61 Power glow 2x a week and then the M-61 moisture pads 2 x a week. Swear my skin is better than when I was 28. People are pretty surprised when I tell them my age. I also started getting facials on a bi-monthly basis.

Focus on your brows -does wonders on Zoom calls. Buying more foundation will just make you look older. And get a really good ring light - lighting is EVERYTHING -LOL

I would say focus on skincare. If a tinted moisturizer is working for you in terms of coverage, then focus on your skin underneath and maybe lifting your face (since we naturally start sagging). You can lift by learning to use a little bronzer and blush on cheeks. If you learn placement of those two, your whole face will be more lifted and youthful looking. There are some great blush placement videos on YouTube. Alexandra Anele, Lisa Eldridge and Ali Andreaa have some that come to mind.

+1 on "hot and flashy". Also agree with starting with skin care. I'm mid-50s and although I've always loved makeup, less is more for me now. And I've upped my skin care game considerably. It makes a big difference.
