Waited 8 years for Baby #3 - Advice Please!

Anonymous
We decided to have our third after giving away EVERYTHING. As a "seasoned" mom who doesn't care about having all the gear anymore, I'm feeling a bit lost on what I need. Please help! I don't remember anything from #1 and #2 who are 8 and 10 now. What are the basics I need??? I have a crib, will get a bucket seat. But what are the go to items and brands, the new stuff I might need (e.g. dockatot?). I don't even remember what we put the baby in for the first few months, it certainly wasn't a crib.

Thank you!

You prob want a bassinet of some sort for the pre-crib days. If you can afford a Snoo, they are soooo great! I’m sure you’ll need a stroller. Uppababy is popular now, you don’t need anything bigger than the Cruz if you don’t plan on adding a 4th. I’d also look at the Baby Jogger City Mini if you want something smaller.

Lots of baby wraps and carrier options too. You may be on the go quite a lot with the older kids and carriers can be so much easier than lugging the stroller. We like our Solly wrap (you might look into Moby or K’tan too) and Beco carrier. Baby bjorn and Ergo are still quite popular too.

Keekaroo changing pad.
Boppy and/or breast friend.
Bottle racks

Stroller—baby jogger city mini or britax b agile would be my choice but this is lifestyle based so you need to decide what fits your lifestyle and budget
Baby carrier—we had ergo baby and it was good for us
Baby monitor—we just had a basic audio one by vtech but you can get all kinds of fancy ones now
Baby bathtub—we had some eurotub thing that we liked but I think any one will do
High chair—we just had the $25 ikea antilop one
Other than that just the obvious basics like diapers, wipes, baby soap/shampoo, bottles and pacifiers if you plan to use them, onesies, bibs, crib sheets, swaddling blankets
Breast pump and other breast feeding supplies you can get free through insurance so don’t buy those

I guess we kept it simple. Our babies slept in the crib from the start so no bassinet recs though I’ve heard great things about the snoo

Hardly anything. Really all you NEED is a car seat and some onesies.

The keekaroo is my one big gear regret. I put a liner on it anyway, I should have just gotten a $15 one.

Keekaroo changing pad
Changing table & crib (Pottery Barn makes nice ones)
Baby bjorn mini carrier
Snoo (for first six months)
Dutailier glider + ottoman
Boppy nursing pillow
Lots of zippered jammies
Lots of burp cloths
Diapers
Aquaphor
Baby bathtub

Most high end items can be found on Facebook marketplace for less.

As a parent who adopted last minute after thinking it would never happen, trust me, this isn't true. Its a nice ideal, but stuff makes your life easier.

A doona might make sense for you if you are on the go a lot with your old kids. It’s an infant car seat that converts straight to a stroller.

+1. This is only true if you kept your old baby stuff to use again. You’re going to need a stroller, bassinet etc etc etc

Wait. 6 year gap between 2 and 3 and every family we know had baby gear they dropped off. Either they were finally ready to part with stuff or had their own last kid and were cleaning house. I bought new bottles and a couple of outfits just because

The stuff people dropped off to us wasn't safe and most things not usable. They had good intentions but I donated or trashed most of it.

I got an entire first wardrobe from a baby born a year before mine as well as sleep sacks, baby carriers, baby seats, a seeing, etc

The stuff we got handed down was nice/new but we got all our stuff from recent parents who were one and done.
