Excessive ear wax?

Anonymous
My 8 year old has always had a lot of ear wax but it has gotten worse over the past year and there is frequently yellow wax all over her ear lobes and it’s annoying to get it off. I mentioned this to our pediatrician in the past who just said some people product more ear wax than others, but she did say to make sure we are not sticking a a tip too far in to clear her ears.

Does anyone else have a child like this? Is there any way to lessen the production of the wax? I let her wear my air pod and it’s coated in wax when she takes it out.

Any recommendations for how to get it off her skin (ear lobe)? She has fine little ear hairs and it’s painful to scrape it off, which makes it really unpleasant for all involved and we have to do this like once per week.

This is my dd. She’s almost 16, and I would say that it’s only in the past couple of years that it’s subsided.

It’s been like this since she was a baby. I cleaned them with q-tips. It often took several of them just to clean one side. I know you’re not supposed do that, but it was the only way to get it out.

As for the outer ear, I used a little bit of eye make-up remover on the q-tip to clean the excessive wax.

For the outside of her ear, try canola oil on a cotton ball. For the inside, the ear candles, although a doctor would never actually recommend that because you can burn yourself.

Our DS was like this in ES, when he had terrible eczema and seasonal allergies. We had his ears irrigated from time to time to clear them. Around age 11/12 he outgrew the allergies and eczema and the excess wax stopped also.

Since my children are little babies, I use earpick to clean their ears inside and outside. All you need is some napkins, earpick and some lights. I remember I cleaned my DH ears the first time, they were so gross with many things coming out. Excessive earwax could be many reasons, eg, never clean well, oily skin, sweating a lot ot hair always covering ears.

Wax production is genetic. Some people have thin sticky wax that comes out easily, and others have hard flaky wax that tends to stay in the canals, but is harder to remove.

There are over the counter earwax flush kits, if you want to try that.

I have to get my ears completely flushed out once every couple years because I stop being able to hear. It’s just a genetic thing, nothing to prevent it.

Yes, you can use debrox to liquify and remove it. Otherwise, just let it be.
