Elementary Schools in North Potomac

Anonymous
My wife and I currently live in Rockville and are exploring a potential move to North Potomac.

I have heard very good things about elementary schools in North Potomac that are part of the Wootton cluster (Travilah/Stone Mill/Dufief). I was hoping that a parent or someone out there can provide additional insight about experiences (positive or negative) with these schools,

Thanks so much in advance.

We are really happy at Stone Mill. It has a warm school community and the academics are solid. Come by at dismissal and you may run into the principal outside greeting everyone by name.

Stone Mill is a lovely school with a very involved parent community. It's also one of the top public schools in all of Montgomery County--as evidenced by the stellar test scores.. Best of luck to you in making your choice.

My kids went to Travilah and we had a great experience there.

Stone Mill is the worksheet capital of the world.

I have friends at Stonemill and have heard the same comment about the worksheets. We are going to Travilah. Our neighbors have all said very positive things about it and that it isn't as bad with the worksheets.

My child isn't of school-age yet. Can you explain what "worksheet capital of the world" means? Thanks!

You mean Gaithersburg, no such thing as North Potomac, made up by real estate agents, like North Bethesda next thing they will come up with is West Fairfax for Leesburg

They very much teach to the test, and their standardized test scores reflect how well they do it. Worksheets as homework start early on and are basically busy work to impress extremely high-achieving parents.

Actually you're a little behind the times. North Potomac was created over 20 years ago from portions of Potomac, Rockville and Gaithersburg. If you're still confused, feel free to check with the Maryland Department of Assessments & Taxation, the U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Census Bureau, etc.

North Potomac has great schools. I'm not as familiar with Travilah or Dufeif, but Stone Mill is a very good school and so is the rest of the Wootton cluster.

MC has some wonderful schools in areas such as Potomac, North Potomac, Rockville, Bethesda and Chevy Chase--but they're all divided into different school clusters. So if you're buying a home to get into a particular school cluster, you really should double check the address on the MCPS website to make sure that it actually feeds into that cluster. Here is the link:

http://gis.mcpsmd.org/gis/PublicLocator2.asp

For example:

North Potomac is divided into the Wootton and Quince Orchard clusters.

Rockville is divided into the Wootton, Montgomery and Rockville HS clusters.

Potomac is divided into the Wootton, Churchill and Montgomery clusters.

Bethesda is divided into the Johnson, Whitman and Bethesda-Chevy Chase clusters.

I have friends with kids at Stone Mill. The parents call it Stone Mill U for all the teaching to the test. They were very unhappy with the aftercare program and switched to a part time babysitter. It is run by a daycare center that is on the school's grounds. They do like the teachers at Stone Mill but not the heavy focus on tests.
