Pants for very skinny boy (age 9)??

Anonymous
I am at a total loss for pants for my 9 year old DS. He is super skinny and just a bit on the short side, but close to average height.

He's currently wearing size 7 Adidas shorts, and they fit his waist perfectly. He has swim trunks that are size 6/7 and work well. Both are a little short, but it's not obvious if you buy shorts cut on the long side and not a big deal. With pants, it's a huge problem because size 7 pants are WAY too short.

We ordered size 8 in several sports pants, and they are all enormous in the waist. He strongly prefers sports pants over jeans or khakis, but at this point, I'm open to anything. Help!

Primary and Tea Collection pants work really well for my skinny 9 year old boy.

Kohls and LL Bean used to carry “slim” sizes.

Kohl's Jumping Beans brand or Tek Gear brands. Some come in slim sizes.

Try Gap slim online and I think Lands End had some slim styles online too

Lands end slim sized with adjustable waistbands inside are the great

Skinny jeans are your friend! My son looks great in the ones from Boden. They fit like regular or even baggy jeans, but they stay up.

Finally, leggings have worked in lieu of sweatpants for us, although your son might be getting a bit old to be totally ok with the styling for that.

H & M skinny jeans with adjustable waist work well for my kid who sounds similar in build. He is taller than average, but if the pants are too long for your son you could just fold them up.

My skinny boys always hated "skinny jeans" because they didn't want tight legs. We need a narrow waist, long inseam with straight leg cut.

Gap had good options with adjustable waist up through around age 10. My older boy found good sizing options at American Eagle.

For athletic pants, Nike and Under Armour run slim. When we were really desperate for athletic pants for the really skinny kid, we bought girls track pants from Dick's. They look the same at that age (as long as you don't get leggings), and the girls versions run longer/slimmer. Just don't tell DS - now 14 - that we did that!

My skinny boy always had better luck with Children's place slims than other brands. Look for pants with extended sizes, then pick slim. Gap, Land's end and such were too big on him, even in a slim. Sometimes Old Navy slims work.

Athletic pants are the hardest. Sometimes Children's Place does them in a slim and would buy them in many colors. You definitely need a drawstring waist. Skip Under Armour entirely -- they are really wide.

Good luck. My skinny one is now 15 and wears a 28x34. The struggle continues!

OP here. Thank you all! You gave me lots of options I hadn't known about before. Will be trying them out!
