Let’s say your child was in the bottom 20-35 percent of students in those classes he’s in.
How did your student do in college? Assume issue with grades is material is difficult not a slacker. Thanks for feedback in advance. |
| OP again, this is directed at Poolesville RM Blair parents. |

Is this "My child is in the bottom 20-35 percent of students in those classes he's in, how will he do in college?" |
RM? |
Sorry, but your premise fails Only 6% of Blair Magnet students have unweighted GPA below 3.75. Only 1 student below 3.50. https://old.mbhs.edu/departments/magnet/ParentResources/MagnetProfile.pdf https://old.mbhs.edu/departments/magnet/ParentResources/MagnetProfile.pdf |
OP here. I’m talking about my kid. He feels like within the magnet program he’s part of the bottom students in his classes. Yes he still has 3.8X unweighted but he has no 4s on APs and some 3s etc. |
| I meant no 5s. He only has 3s and 4s on his exams so far: |
Your kid is fine. It sounds like the magnet program is a little more challenging for him than some peers, but as long as he is working hard and learning, he is in good shape. He should stop comparing himself to others. As far as college goes, if he focuses on choosing a school that is a good fit for his interests and doesn’t try to overload on classes to “keep up”, his work ethic will serve him well and he’ll do fine in college. Kids are all different, and that’s okay. All three of mine were in magnet programs. My oldest was “average smart” - good student, strong scores, but not super motivated with classwork and definitely in the bottom 25% of his magnet cohort. Shaky grades at UMD CS (poor study habits continued+pandemic), but he graduated, has a good job, is married and is happy. My middle kid is “crazy smart” - everything is super easy, must have a photographic memory for the volume of information he consumes. Took 6 or 7 classes per semester undergrad and doing the same in grad school. Many opportunities to choose from career wise. He is also happy and doing fine. Both kids were very different from each other, but both were still far ahead of other kids academically. Your kid will be fine. |
how long ago was it? OPs kid may not even get to UMD these days. But it is not the end of the road really. |
| Depending on major, likely UMD-CP is the only relevant college that would be a reach for your DC, since (a) MCPS [better off from other counties] (b) SMCS [better off at home school] (c) UMD relies heavily on stats: UW GPA and SAT [in recent years Blair SMCS ~ 47% UW 4.0; ~ 43% UW 3.75-3.99] |
Yes hearing from seniors UMD would be a reach. My son knows two who didn’t get it with a 1500 plus SAT this year but both had too many Bs. |
Thank you for this. I while I know UMD is a reach hoping for Pitt or PSU, maybe VT. |
2018 HS graduate. 700V/750M SAT scores got him into UMD. It certainly wasn’t his GPA, ECs, or essay. |
Things at UMD have changed so much at our school just in the last years. |
How many exams, what grade? |
