Tyler Place - How to get there?

Anonymous
We are considering Tyler Place for our summer vacation and am trying to get an idea of budget and time to get up there.

Thanks!

Takes about 10 hours from DC - we stopped in Saratoga Springs, which is a very cute little historic/college town north of Albany that was great for stretching legs. This year, we'll probably stop at Hudson Valley Children's Museum or something like that. Definitely doable in one day - for a more leisurely pace, you could stop in Westchester or outside Albany for a night.

It's a long drive to do in one day, though the second half (once you're on the NY Thruway) is pretty easy driving and nice scenery. We went to TP for several years when our kids were younger (we loved it) and usually broke the trip up into two days. Great places to stop along the way are Fort Ticonderoga (esp. if your kids love history), Storm King Art Center (outdoor scuplture museum -- fabulous), and FDR's home along the Hudson (again, we are history-lovers). Oh, yes, and one year we drove up on a Friday to Burlington, had a great dinner and walked along the lake, then went up to TP the next a.m. This works well as you can swim, bike, sail, play tennis or whatever before check-in time. Enjoy!

We're headed there this summer and are planning to drive to Albany (about 7 hours) and stay with friends for one night and then it's about a 3 hour drive. It's all inclusive and for a family of 5 it will be around $6K.

From all the reviews I've read, it sounds great. Call ahead. They were full for August so we're going in June.

We've gone for a bunch of years and sometimes we drive and sometimes we fly. It depends on our plans before/after Tyler Place and the airfare. Some years we have flown for less than $150/person! The week we go there are tons of DC area families, so we send out an email if we find a great airfare. Then we basically end up with a Tyler Place plane load of people. The kids all sit together and the parents sit together. It starts the vacation so much sooner!

Where do you fly into if you fly, and do you need to rent a car or do they have transportation from the airport?

You fly into Burlington, and they will send a van with car seats (admittedly relatively "vintage" car seats") to come pick you up. You don't need a car while there unless you want to go do some exploring on your own - otherwise all the activities (like trip to wine country, farms, etc.) provide transportation (either with other families who brought cars or with TP vans.
