Letrozole/Femara

Anonymous
Has anyone been TTC with the help of letrozole/femara? I’ve been on 5mg and have gotten 2 follicles each cycle but the growth on 5mg has slowed consistently. Last cycle, I had to go in for follicle scans on CD12, 14 & 16 before I finally had an 18mm+ to trigger. I asked my dr to bump me to 7.5mg to see if that helped and well…I’m panicking! I went in for my CD11 scan today and I have a 13.5 & 12mm on my left side and a 14.5 & 15.5 on my right. I am completely shocked that I now have 4 follicles and am slightly freaking out! The nurse was like “well 7.5 definitely worked!”. I’m going back Friday to see where they are at and she said I’ll most likely be doing the ovidrel trigger shot Friday/CD13 and she said 3 should at least be at 18mm by then. I’m just so nervous about having all these follicles and wondering if anyone else has ended up with 3-4 on letrozole and what the outcome was? I’m fine with twins but terrified of anything more!

Your doctor sounds like a quack. Why in the world would they have given you 7.5- the point of Letrazole isn’t to speed up ovulation, it’s to make sure it happens and when it does you have a ready egg, which you clearly accomplished with 5mg. I’d sit this cycle out. “Selectively reducing” is disgusting and should be illegal, particularly when someone uses FERTILITY TREATMENTS to conceive them all. I mean c’mon ppl.

OP here: Yes I was getting an egg with 5mg but the last couple of months, it’s been taking to CD19-20 to get there and my clinic doesn’t like to see you trigger past CD18. He agreed that my egg growth was slowing compared to what it did a few months ago and agreed to up me to 7.5 as long as I was ok with the higher chance of multiples. I plan on seeing where they are at size wise on Friday morning and then will make a decision from there. My post was for others who have also done this so please leave your negativity elsewhere.

Yeah I HAVE done this. Just did in fact. Ovulated late too on 5mg - one follicle - pregnant. That’s the goal right? This is just terrible medical protocol.

I think it was reasonable to try the dose, but at GW they would have you sit it out with 4 follicles. Not sure about 3, but it probably depends on your diagnosis and history. Hopefully they bench you if all continue to develop.

Op here- that’s great but clearly my clinic has different protocols.

Op here- thanks! I go in tomorrow morning to see where they are at size wise. If all 4 are 18mm+, im probably going to sit it out as I just don’t want to tempt it, especially with the ovidrel shot that’ll force all to release! If just 3 are over 18mm, I’ll probably take my chances. Not sure what my clinics rules are regarding number of follicles but im sure I’ll find out more tomorrow!

SGF - I had to cancel a cycle with 5 follicles.

How would a clinic “force” you to cancel a cycle? Couldn’t you technically still have sex and see what happens?

OP here:
Had my scan this morning and I have a 16mm, 17mm & 18mm. The 4th one that was at a 12mm on Wednesday, stopped growing. So we will be triggering with ovidrel tomorrow and seeing what happens! My dr is completely fine with us going ahead with 3.
