commute to Potomac vs. the cathedral schools

Anonymous
We live in old town and are new to the area. DH keeps saying he prefers Potomac (over the cathedral schools) so the kids don't have to commute into dc, but I am looking at a map and I am wondering if the commute to Potomac School might be longer!! I will test this out in a car during rush hour, of course, but does anyone have any idea of whether they may be comparable? Thanks.

Both commutes would be pretty harsh.

SSSAS seems like its worth considering, given what you've shared.

the trip up the GW parkway from Old Town to 495 is one I'd rather make in the a.m., I think.

both would be really hard, but wouldn't Potomac have a bus?

I'm not sure from your post if your child has been accepted to both of these schools for next year. If so, congratulations! I actually live just South of Old Town and will be doing the commute to Beauvoir next year. I know at least one Old Ton family, and know of two others, doing the same. So, there may be room for carpooling. Regarding Potomac, the bus stop in Old Town is at the Safeway (on Royal Street, I think), and people seem quite happy with it. As for the schools, I don't think you can go wrong with these two great choices. I know several very happy families at both, and there is a nice Old Town community.

OP, we live in Old Town and indeed your child would take the bus (required) from the Safeway there. There will be occasions where you will drive yourself for an event - and not during rush hour. Take the GW Parkway all the way to 123 - half an hour at most.

We did not consider DC schools other than GDS as the driving and congestion on those tiny streets is horrific and long.

I go to Potomac (don't ask me how I've ended up on a chat room for moms), and I know a lot of people who live in Old Town. The commute isn't that bad, and the bus is fun for those in middle/lower school. Maybe IS (intermediate school) too. Other kids have much, much worse commutes and manage well.
