Private & Independent Schools

Hello,
Would you please provide your feedback on The Langley School in McLean vs. Green Hedges in Vienna? Which would you prefer and why? Thank you. |
| If you just want a preschool and live in Great Falls, I'd go to Village Green because of the commute. If you want to send your child to private school for elementary, then I'd go with Langley. If your eventual goal is Potomac, it probably doesn't matter that much, but I think I'd go with Langley, because that way you are set at a good school even if you don't get accepted, and Langley probably has a higher acceptance rate than Village Green, if people actually apply there from Langley. Note that the Langley preschool's head came over to Langley from Village Green, and her child now attends in an upper grade. |
| Ha - PP here - ok you said Green Hedges. I'd go with Langley every time unless you really want Montessori preschool. |
| Is it true that more Langley kids are accepted to Potomac at K than Village Green kids? |
| I am more familiar with Green Hedges than Langley, but I would definitely choose Langley over Green Hedges. It has better facilities and a nicer program. Nothing wrong with Green Hedges, but it is very small which can be quite limiting for your child socially ... so few kids to pick from for making close friendships. |

Can't comment on the comparison between the two schools. But I will tell you as a parent of three at TLS, we have been very happy there. Very nice balance. Acacdemically strong and a fairly tolerant, nurturing environment, without being too soft. Our 8th grader there has been prepared well for high quality private high schools. He has tested well and has been received well at the schools we have applied to. We are optimistic about getting into a number of those. And this was a kid that definitely needed development and growth - he was not a natural.
The other positive about the school is that they continue to make well placed investments in facilities and programs. So, they are a school that is on the upswing and gaining additional momentum. |
OP, I could have written this post -- if our DC is admitted to both of these schools (big "if" I know!), we will be choosing between them. The Langley School has much better facilities and more "bells and whistles" than Green Hedges, but people seem to love, love, love Green Hedges and its sense of community (this is an over-simplication of the many comparisons between the two schools, of course!) I don't know where you live, but a friend of ours who is an educational consultant said that she feels like one can not over-emphasize the benefits of attending school within your community and that all other things being relatively equal, it is like home-buying decisions -- it is best not to get too drawn in by the "bells and whistles" if it is at the expense of "location, location, location." |

I'm a Langley parent and I generally agree with the PP about location being important. Langley has a lot of Vienna families, and a few Oakton families. But you will definitely be driving a lot in rush hour if you live on the western side of Vienna, unless you go that way to work anyway. If you live on the eastern side of Vienna towards Tysons, I wouldn't personally go to Green Hedges because the rush hour is hard to deal with through Vienna, and I would have to go through Vienna and back past my house to get to work.
One thing I didn't like about Green Hedges was the lack of group spaces - they told me during our tour how cramped the assembly room gets. Langley has a new arts center where they have plays, lectures, band rooms, parent dinners/events, hot lunch for the older kids. The tuition wasn't that different, so I thought it was important to get the best resources possible. I think Langley has a great community and teachers, and I love it. I hate to think of Langley pulling in students with "bells and whistles" only. For us, the location is better than Green Hedges, even though we are in Vienna, but nearer Tysons. |

Thank you so much to all who responded. I hope we all receive good news soon.

Thanks so much for this input. You definitely provide some "food for thought" regarding the commute since it does seem that traffic on 123/Maple through Vienna is only getting worse and it is interesting to hear that Langley has a lot of Vienna (and even some Oakton) families. Also, I was surprised that there is not more of a tuition differential between Langley and Green Hedges. Thanks again to those who have responded. Are there any Green Hedges families out there willing to share? And to the OP - we're keeping our fingers crossed also -- good luck to you! |
| I am not the OP, but am hoping to revive this thread now that acceptances have gone out. I would particularly love to hear from any Green Hedges families or Langley families who live in Vienna. Thanks so much! |

Don't live in Vienna and don't have any perspective of Green Hedges. But I do have three children at Langley and have been there for 7 years. If you'd like perspective on Langley I can provide. If so, let me know some areas you would like input on and I can post for the benefit of all. |
| Not the OP, but I'd appreciate some thoughts on the positives and negatives of Langley from the PP. The more I am exposed to the school, the better I like it. Overall, what are the 3-5 major positives and negatives about Langley from your experience. We have been accepted and are very close to choosing it. Thanks. |

8:19 - I am not OP but any info youwant to share on Langley would be much appreciated... especially exmission process (how they support, public vs private, etc). We are a MClean family so commute is easy but will likely be movingto DC in near future - will that be hard in terms of maintaining friends etc if almost all kids are from Vienna/ Great falls/McLean?
TIA |
