Marie Osmond's son

Anonymous
I was so sad to learn that Marie Osmond's son Michael has committed suicide. A cousin died young and I know from our family how awful it is to lose a child. My heart goes out to the grieving family.

However, here is my rant: Why do the media have to report that this was her "adopted son?" How is that aspect of the story newsworthy? Why isn't he just her son? My children are MY CHILDREN and it would make me so sad to see them reported in a news story as my "adopted children." End of rant.

Well, she must have told the media that it was her adopted son.
That kind of information is not publicly available

I think she has been quite public about the kids she adopted, no?

I always get the willies when children are referred to as "adopted son/daughter" when the fact that they are adopted has no bearing on the issue being discussed. The newsmedia seem to do this routinely, and I am not quite sure why. FYI, I am neither adopted nor an adoptive parent, so I don't consider myself to be in a "touchy" category.

This does not make it right, what the media does, but here is my thought: a lot of people know that there is a definite genetic component to bipolar disorder, drug/alcohol addiction, depression and the like. Ms. Osmond and her son were not tied by genes. The media are possibly trying to answer an unasked question of, how did this teen come by his apparent depression?

Agree re genetic component. But maybe because Marie is also known to suffer from depression, the media may be trying to distinguish the biological component between her and her son.
