| I am so sick of my hairstyle. Side part, long and straight, blunt cut. So boring. But layers just do not work with my thin hair (I've tried over and over), and I cannot deal with having to style my hair with a blowdryer or anything like that, so I feel stuck in a rut. What I really want is a stylist like you see on the makeover TV shows, one who will look at my face shape and my hair and tell me what will look good on me and do it. But I have never encountered any who seem willing to take the initiative like that. Even in the most expensive salons, they are all bending over backwards to ask me what I want, how exactly they should part it, how much they should take off... Does anyone have any recommendations for an excellent stylist in DC who is assertive and opinionated; one who will tell you what he/she thinks will look good, and do it? TIA. |
| I remember reading on a website for a local style consultant that they would refer you to a top hair and makeup stylist - maybe someone has used one of these and has a recommendation - but can someone please post a recommendation - I need help as well! |
| I always let Andre Chreky do whatever he wants with my hair and it always looks fabulous. I get compliments on my hair all the time. I love him! He's the expert, what do I know about how my hair should be? |
| I used to go to Andre Chreky. He never took the time to analyze what would suit me best and never attempted anything new, so my cut always looked pretty average. I wouldn't recommend him. |
| Have to agree with pp. I was a long-time Andre client and initially thrilled but shortly thereafter I was turned into a Washington helmet head with conservative cut. I became part of the production line and passed from person to person with no real thought about me and my style. |
| do a search on Andre, he seems to suck. Also, his brother in Rockville is awful! |

I really trust my stylist, Marcella at ILO--of course, I don't let her do what she wants with my hair because, well, because I am a control freak. But she has a good sense of what will flatter you overall. I think there are other great stylists there too, as well as colorists. Maybe you need to add some highlights/lowlights or different color. If you have straight but thick hair, you should be able to handle some long layers--add highlights or a color tint, maybe.
I also judge stylists by their own look--I run from those who are too trendy or extreme, since that is not my look at all. Definitely do a consult first. |
| Andre Chreky sucks. He is not worth the $$ or time. |

I have hated my hair for a long time. My stylist moved out of the area, (BEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO ME).....and I started going to someone new. He gave me the best haircut ever, and I have been going to him for over 6 months. The best part, is that he really listens and takes TIME to make it look right. He also colors my hair, and while I am processing....he always does SOMETHING to my hair or to my ends, to make it last and look great till the next appointment. I cant say enough good things about him.
Corte Salon U street, NW Carlos. Good Luck |
Same. He is truly an artist and will make you feel and look wonderful! |
| Try Camille at Bogart in Georgetown - I've recommended her to numerous people, all of whom keep going back |
I used to go to Carlos when he was at Salon XYZ. Brilliant colorist. |

Steve Waldman at Ava Salon.
225 Pennsylvania Ave., SE Washington, DC 20003 202-544-5111 He is a national educator with Logics (Loreal), so travels around the country teaching the latest in cut and color. My 5th and last stylist since moving to DC 3.5 years ago. I sat in his chair and he told me what he felt was working with my hair and what could be improved to better suit my face and hair type. Fabulous cut and color. The salon also has great reviews on Yelp. BTW - I have straight, very fine hair. I do style it with a hair dryer and good brush and it takes all of 5 minutes. With the right cut and a little product, hair doesn't have to be high maintenance to look nice. But, the cut is good enough that if I do need to run out of the house without styling it, it may not look salon fabulous, but I can live with it. |
| OP here -- thanks, everyone, for the recommendations, and please keep them coming! Lots of good leads here. I'm interested in the debate over Chreky. I finally swore off that place after several years and several stylists, despite its convenience to my office, but never tried Andre himself. From the balance of the comments here, I think I'll try some others first. |

I used to go to Andre Chreky Salon for my hair after I tried out their eyebrow waxing and manicure/pedicure services. While I enjoyed the pampering from the eyebrow/nail services, I was displeased with the hair services: the stylist gave no advice on what to do with my hair, except offer conditioning and color (no advice on style). I didn't feel pampered enough for the price I paid for the hair.
I go to Stanly at Eclips in McLean. He does a good job on fine, thin hair. |
