Apple Pencil compatability

Grandparents gave our daughter an Apple Pencil (1) for Christmas. My husband has an Ipad Pro for work but can't download aps that aren't free on it. We have an older personal ipad (mini 4) but it's not compatible with the pen.
Any ideas? |
