Old Town Alexandria

Anonymous
Anyone out there live in Olde Town - we are moving to the DC area and I am very interested in Olde Town. It seems cute and charming and like Georgetown, but less crazy. How is the commute into the city (by car) and do people send their kids to the DC private schools? We like Beauvoir and Sidwell, etc - of course......so just want to get a sense of it all.
Also, wondering about price of houses/townhouses (have looked a little on-line) what's the sense of community? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, anyone.

We live in Old Town Alexandria, we like it, but if I had to do it all over again I would move to Rosemont. My neighborhoodist, but still urban. Our child attends a private school in Alexandria. I have people on my street that go to schools in DC. Commute is pretty easy for my husband. He uses the George Washington Parkway rather that 95/495. I do love this area and it is fun to be able to walk to everything and catch the metro. We live very close to metro. Del ray is another great neighborhood in this area, very urban, metro accessible. Good luck and welcome to DC

I am the OP - now I am curious about Rosemont and DelRay.......

rosemont is great, very close to old town, walking distance. So is parts of del ray, but not as close. Rosemont has beautiful homes and great parks. Del ray has a great main street america feel. Cute homes, most are smaller than Rosemont but there are lots of different size homes in both areas. Del ray is less expensive. Both are less than Old Town. I would look hard at both before buying in Old Town. Both have a great community feel. I just think if you have kids, either of these places may fit your bill better than Old Town. BTW, I am the poster that lives in Old Town, this is just my opinion. Good Luck.

We live in Rosemont and love it. Close to metro and things to walk to. Nice older homes and tons of families with young children. It's a great area.

Love it! And love it some more!!!

We lived in Old Town while our house in Mt. Vernon was having work done...my husband owns a townhouse with 2 apartments that he rents out . I was completely torn about moving ONLY 4 miles south after living in Old Town. Old Town has great restaurants, shops, lots of kids and dogs. We moved to Mt. Vernon so our son AND DOG could have a house with a huge yard, and it's lovely where we live, we're close to the water, our neighborhood is out of a Norman Rockwell painting...but we're in Old Town all the time. ALL THE TIME.

Very expensive although prices have come down. My husband is a real estate invester and he's found foreclosures popping up in Old Town. Commute is easy to DC and National.

we live in del ray and love it. DH and I both commute downtown, which takes about 30-35 minutes during rush hour. 45 on the way home if we leave during the worst traffic times. But, you can take the metro in 20 minutes which is great - we live in walking distance to the braddock metro.
we looked at old town too. more expensive, less neighborhoody-feel, but of course you get all that old town has to offer, so there are advantages. Personally I like living in del ray with old town as a close option for entertainment/shopping/walks/restaurants, because we have a yard, etc, which would be hard, if not impossible to find, in old town.
I have two kids (2 yo and infant) and I have always thought they would go to private school in alexandria -- Sidwell would be a hike!! My understanding is that there are good private schools here too. They may not be quite Sidwell-caliber, but I believe there are some really respected ones.
