Though I'm not a fan of anything trendy and generally avoid clothing that advertises a brand (whether it's upscale Chanel or GAP), last spring I tried on the TB flats and have to admit they fit nicely, felt comfortable and were well-made with very good quality leather. If you're planning to wear them to work and don't mind the trendiness factor, I could see spending the money to get them; however, for me, ballet flats are part of a more casual look, so I decided not to spend that much. Instead, for about the same amount of money I would have spent on a single pair of TBs, I bought 3 pairs of moderately-priced (under $100) ballet flats, which I love. Over the spring, summer and well into fall, I wore them a lot as alternatives to sneakers or flip-flops, but not for work (FWIW, I work part-time from home, but meet with clients in their offices about once/week).
The brands that worked for me include Geox, Aerosoles and Dansk (yes, they make shoes other than clogs). I got two pairs in black, one with a buckle and one with a bow, and one pair in green. With jeans and casual skirts or dresses, these shoes look great when I'm running out the door to drop off/pick up kids at school, go grocery shopping, or if I'm going to a casual social event. For work, however, I like a more pulled-together look and I need a little height, so I'll wear something with a heel -- not stillettos, of course, but a wedge or kitten heel. If you're taller than I am or work in a more casual setting, flats might work for you, but in that case, I'd say the TBs might be worth it.
