Can you mix and match earring and necklace stones?

Are your earrings and necklaces supposed to match--i.e. pearl earrings with a pearl necklace? I have a pair of diamond studs that I like to wear with a pearl choker, but all of a sudden it occurred to me that that might be a faux pas. I'll probably still do it anyway , but just wondering...

By all means wear the diamond studs and the pearls together! It is a great look. You certainly don't want to be too matchy, matchy with pearl earrings and a necklace - boring!

Wear away! I love jewelry and I love to mix and match, whether it be stones or metals. I don't think there are rules, but even if there were, who cares. Wear what you like. FWIW, I think diamonds and pearls are great together.

Matching earrings and necklace is OL (Old Lady). Definitely mix it up but you need to coordinate the basic geometric shape. So, if you are wearing pearls (round), the diamond studs should also be of a round nature and not square, for example.
