Preschool and Daycare Discussion
|
Does the curriculum in these preschools have a religious component, or is it completely secular?
I've tried searching the archives and websites, but can't find a clear answer. Thanks! |
| St Columba's is definitely Christian, but there are kids of all faiths there. They celebrate Christmas in a big way and they sing a little prayer before they eat, but that is really about it. It is really be kind to others and give to others type of stuff, very inoffensive! |

If you mean St. John's in Georgetown, the kids do 'chapel' once a month, which basically entails the Rector reading them a story with a not obviously religious 'lesson' and them singing When the Saints go Marching In and This Little Light of Mine. It's sweet, and by no means preachy or instructional. Parents are welcome to, and many often do, join. That being said, they do openly observe Christmas, so if you're someone who wants a school event in late December to be a 'holiday' function instead of a 'Christmas' function, you might not be comfortable.

| OP here - thanks PPs, that's very helpful. |
| I would add that St. Columba's doesn't know whether they are religious or not. The Director made a big point about being "secular" in an Open House and then proceeded to describe their re-enactment of the Jesus birth story every year with full participation by all children and families. While some non-Christians might find this fine, it is absolutely not a secular way to celebrate the holiday and St. Columba's should be careful not to confuse people by claiming they are not religious. |
