iPhone photos and Videos - back up and save to Useful and accessible PC or external drive

I have two years of photos and videos on my iPhone. Please recommend a convenient way to upload photos and ultimately download to a PC or external drive that allows accessible tagging, saving and album creating etc.?

You can download Google photos and have that app download all your media on your phone.

Since I have my son, my phone is always full of photos and videos. Google photo is really useful because I know, if something happens to the phone, I have a backup. I would also like to know a quick way to transfer all of the data to an external drive. I think it would be possible to transfer them via a cable, but I don't have one on hand. But Because of my addiction, to download Instagram video online
I'm afraid Google photo won't handle it anymore.
