Apple watch tip calculator

I just noticed that my apple watch now has a calculator which includes a tip calculator. But it's not working for me and I'm wondering if it's user error or a bug. If I enter a number on the front screen and hit "Tip" - it goes to a screen where it is calculating the "tip" on a number that is a fraction of the number I entered.

It seems pretty straightforward and I'm doing what it says on this page: https://9to5mac.com/2019/07/22/split-bill-tip-apple-watch/ but it's not working. If I enter 124.98 on the first screen and press Tip, on the second screen it shows the number on the top of the screen as .1738248 and 18% tip as .04. So it's like doing a calculation in between or something.



Usually when I have an issue like this I google it and see tons of reports of the same issue - but that's not the case... just articles about how great the tip calculator is. Has anyone else run into this?

Move the decimal one place to the left (on the total amount, not pre-tax). Round up, or to the nearest dollar. Multiply by two.

That's it. This is 3rd grade math.

OP here. I know how to calculate tips but I am also a technology geek and thought it was a cool new feature worth checking out. Then it didn't work and I am wondering if others had the same issue.

Tipping is on pretax. Do not tip based on the total.

Let's assume you are going out to dinner in a state with a 10% restaurant tax, and are spending $500 on the meal. An expensive dinner. Let's also assume you are tipping 20% (although that's a generous assumption for someone who wants to tip pretax, but whatever).

Can you guess what the difference is tipping 20% pretax v. 20% post tax on a $500 bill?

It's $10.

Similarly, if you have a $100 meal, it if a whole whopping extra $2 to tip post tax.

Don't be cheap.

OP again. I saw somewhere about pressing "=" after entering the amount and before hitting the TIP button and it worked.

It's a cool function. Even if you are confident in your ability to calculate tips, it's nice to be able to do it quickly and also split the bill across multiple people in one step. But it is post-tax so there's that.
