How to turn off iCloud without losing docs?

I’m trying to free up iCloud space and was deleting files from iCloud on my iPad. I wasn’t paying much attention and suddenly realized that the warning said deleting files from iCloud would also delete from all devices. Wha?!
The docs were all from my MacBook so I turned it on and immediately turned off the WiFi so it couldn’t sync. I figured I’d just turn off iCloud and be good but when I try to do that the warning says everything will be deleted from my device and remain in the cloud only. Is there any way around this? I’m backing up the computer to an old school hard dive now just to be safe, but wtf? Is my only option to lose it all and then just restore from the hard drive? Related, any recommendations for a cloud backup system that is genuinely just a backup system? |
