Private & Independent Schools
| If I love Beauvoir's educational philosophy (e.g., lots of recess, minimal homework, substantial and diverse arts offerings, emphasis on social education), but would just as soon avoid its culture of Christian privilege (a point I'm happy to concede is largely subjective and certainly subject to reasonable disagreement; I'm hoping to avoid that disagreement on this chain, though -- please just accept my [mis?]percetion for purposes of this board), where should I be looking? Cultures I could embrace for elementary school include: secular-crunchy; citizen-of-the-world; hyper-local (DC- or even neighborhood-centric); public service; and surely others. Many thanks in advance. |
| If you don't like Christian values and want something with more Jewish kids or Muslim or whatever it is you are -- try GDS or Sheridan. |

St. Patrick's? It's an episcopal school, no? |

OP, that's fine if you want to avoid Beauvoir's culture of "Christian privilege," but the bad news is that at Sidwell you're going to get a culture of Quaker privilege, and at GDS you'll find a culture of knee-jerk liberal privilege. Not sure about Sheridan, Burgundy, and others. Good luck! |
| Sidwell (notwithstanding the "Quaker privilege"), WIS, CHDS, Sheridan, or -- honestly -- Oyster, Lafayette, Murch, Janney, or Hyde. |
| Maybe WIS for the "citizen of the world" culture. But at root I agree with those who've suggested public schools for avoiding a "culture of privilege" (of any kind) as much as possible. |
| But what about "lots of recess, minimal homework, substantial and diverse arts offerings, emphasis on social education"? |
