Bike Shopping in DC?

Anonymous
I have gotten into biking over the past couple of years, and am ready to significantly upgrade my 15 year old bike. Where is the best place to go in the DMV for a big selection and good advice? In the past, I've done all my shopping and service at City Bikes, but I think that is not the right place for this purchase.

I think it depends on the type of bike you want. I like the Daily Rider on H Street a lot and that's where I take my bike for repairs and maintenance. But the bikes there definitely tend toward the hipster/European type.

No, they really only carry a couple brands (mostly their own) so the selection is small. Go to a real bike shop.

What type of biking are you into? Road, cargo, committing, mountain, cyclocross?

Cyclists can be terribly extreme gear heads. Only someone competing in the Tour de France needs to care how much their water bottle cage weighs. But, there's real value in going to your local bike shop - literally the closest full-service shop to your house. They have a very vested interested in identifying and matching your needs and helping you find a community of fellow riders in your neighborhood with group rides, classes on maintenance, etc. If you're getting more serious and riding a lot, the best thing they will offer is a bike fitting to customize the bike to your exact proportions. You could get a bike cheaper online, but you really need to be pretty good at bike building to take advantage.

We bought a bike at this place in Clarendon: https://www.trekbikes.com/retail/arlington_clarendon/

They have a 100% guarantee, so you can return or exchange within 30 days.

Have not purchased there but have had a good experience getting adult and children’s bikes serviced there.

Conte’s in Ballston(?) is also a good choice
