Permit required to replace gas oven/stove? (Arlington)

Anonymous
I can’t seem to figure this out from the Arlington a county website. Anyone replace a gas oven/stove in Arlington recently and know the drill? If I want to buy one from Home Depot and have them install, will they pull the permit (if one is needed)?

Yes, you need a permit. I bought a new gas range at Best Buy and their installer pulled the permit. I had to arrange the inspection through Arlington county after the installation.

Both Arlington County and Alexandria City require a permit for any "gas" installation such as a gas stove top/range or gas heated sauna. The reason is to ensure proper, safe installation of gas lines. We've all heard of the rare gas explosion and morbidity and mortality. Do it right, do it once is my Moto.

Hi OP, if you’re installing one for the first time, yes. If you’re just replacing an existing one, no. If you want the place you’re buying from to install it, they may require it.

I don't know about the permits but I've always been told I need to suck it up and hire a proper plumber, I have, and they deal with that. It's $$$ but I don't want to splode.

Thanks!

A house in Rockville exploded a couple years ago due to a slapshot gas dryer installation, which wasn't inspected. Luckily the occupants weren't home at the time. It does happen. Why risk it?

not true in more counties. We had a gas water heater replaced ~7 years ago and had to pull a permit for the gas line reconnection. We also had to do the same for a replacement gas stove this past year (different county this time).

That could be, but I was sharing my recent experience in Arlington where OP asked about. Disconnect old gas stove, connect new one.

Hmm. There is definitely a permit for changing a gas appliance:

However, I recently changed a gas hot water heater (which appears to need a permit) by a professional plumber based in Arlington without a permit. Maybe it is one of those things where you are supposed to but it is not enforced.

Could this be new PP? I could have sworn it said just for relocating or new ones. Could you imagine them having to go to each house just for a new appliance?

Wow I had no idea. We had a gas water heater replaced a few years ago. It was a reputable installer so I guess they pulled a permit but I had no idea!

We live in Arlington and replaced our gas dryer a couple of years ago. Like a PP, we bought at Home Depot and their installer pulled the permit. It was part of the cost we paid them.

The irony...

Decided not to install a new water heater just because of those permits. I am really too busy now to take care of such issues. Just hate the fact that it's mandatory
