Va safety inspection on a new car?

Anonymous
I just got a $50.00 ticket on my parked 2019 Subaru Ascent. I didn’t even know a safety inspection was required for a new vehicle- is this right?

Did you buy it out of state? If you buy it at a Virginia dealership, they'll typically do the safety inspection before you take delivery. If you buy it out of state, you have to get a safety inspection once the car is registered in Virginia.

We have a winner. Bought it in Maryland. Thanks for the clarification.

Hey, it happened to me, too (Subaru bought in Maryland but I live in Virginia -- is it my fault the dealers in my state are terrible?)

OP here. I think it’s a conspiracy.

They’ll often waive the ticket if you show you got the inspection.

A MD dealer can not perform a VA inspection as they can not be licensed. It is the buyers responsibility.

BTW, if you want to know how long a car has been on the dealer lot, look at the month of the inspection. The inspection is typically the first thing they do.
