I cannot get in touch with anyone from DMV to tell them I traded my old car

Anonymous
I just received my vehicle renewal notice for my old car. I tried to update DMV (Virginia) via their website, but the site said I need to call DMV for a PIN. (Super annoying!)

I've been calling DMV for 3 days and, for 3 days, there has been a recording that says they can't answer my call because "all 230 of our phone lines are in service."

What happens if I don't update DMV that I traded my car? Can I just toss this vehicle registration notice?

I hate DMV.

Where are the plates? On the new vechicle? You have a current registration?
Do you have documents from the dealer?

I’d toss.

I would go in person to the DMV. This kind of paperwork is just better to make sure it's done right.

No, I didn't keep the old plates. I left them at the dealership to toss. New vehicle has temporary plates with a new current registration.

Any document attesting to the fact that the dealer said they’d toss them?

In MD you have to keep the insurance on until you return the plates. You may need to go to the DMV since it sounds like the records need to be cleaned up.

UGH! DMV is the worst place on Earth. Going there should really be unnecessary. How ineffective can an organization be??

No, they didn't provide me a document saying that.

Thank you. If I have to, I will.

The dealer should have handled this. But if they didn't, then you handle it. Go to the DMV, like everyone else does. And get a PIN for future use.

OP I'd call the dealer to ask if/when they followed up and what documents they can give you before you go to the DMV.

Well, be be fair, I got the new vehicle on January 25, so maybe it's still in the works...?
