Jury duty while on vacation with the kids

Anonymous
We booked our vacation for easter break a few weeks ago and I just go summoned for Jury duty in DC for that same time (Grand Jury).
The kids are off which is why we were traveling, Is there any way to get out of this?
We will loose a lot of money if we have to cancel the trip and we will have to put the kids in camps.

I am in the same position. Go to the Web page for Grand Jury jurors and find the email and phone numbers. Contact JurorHelp@dcsc.gov and request a deferral. They will send you a list of the next few sessions to choose from.

Is saying that I have already booked vacation a good excuse? I try to defer online it didn't let me saying I have reached the max deferral although I have never deferred before. I guess I will have to email.

I'd just say you will be out of town. No need to get into the specifics of why/where etc. Just say you will not be available because of planned travel.

Just tell them you have existing travel plans and offer to show proof (assuming you have plane tix, hotel reservations). Don't mention "vacation."

You will lose money. Not loose.

Pet peeve.

You can defer because you will be out of town. Not a big deal.

They may want to see a copy of the airplane ticket, if I remember correctly a past experience with this.

No, no, no. OP plans to loose the money and watch it run away.

I said family obligation and offered to serve in any of the immediately subsequent sessions.

I was put into a jury pool, said I had travel plans for the following week, was picked to serve on a jury, and the judge was annoyed when I reminded her the day before leaving that I would be out of town for a week. Not sure if the trial lasted longer that they thought (4+days vs 1) but I was totally up front and they replaced me with an alternate and moved on.

Long time ago I was selected for grand jury duty (once a week for 6 months) and I had to miss 4 of the weeks due to work travel. They have enough grand jurors to hear the cases brought each time, but the clerks were so helpful in that usual DC kind of way.

DC is a strange place.

OH, god, when I had grand jury in DC about 10 or 12 years ago, I had to be there EVERY DAY, ALL DAY, 8:30-4:30, for SIX WEEKS. As in, leave my job for 6 weeks and do another job. Horrifying.
