Why is Bird Box rated R? No spoilers please!

I was thinking about watching this with my 12 year old daughter but am hesitant because of the R rating. Is it rated R mainly due to scariness or are there sex scenes and strong language?

They’re fade to black. My guess is all the graphic murders. I’ve watched the Walking Dead and there were a couple of killing scenes that surprised even me with ingenuity plus the clear focus on the way they died.

I wouldn't watch it with a child under HS age.

Middle schoolers are watching it and talking about it. OP you should watch it alone first and decide if it’s ok for your child.

I was talking to my husband about it and how I wanted to see it and my 13 year old announced that he had watched it and it was really good. I wasn't happy about that but I've seen it since then and knowing my kid I would have been OK with him watching it anyway. For whatever reason, he loves scary/suspenseful stuff.
