WPPSI for 3.11mo vs 4+

Anonymous
We were criticized for taking the test when my ds was 3.11 rather then waiting until he was 4 bcse there is a fine motor skills section that he's missing. He did well, but now I feel as if DAs will think that somehow I was gaming the system and that he's missing something and will discount how well he did. Is this paranoid or should I try to do something about it like discuss his fmskills at the interview? This process makes me totally anxious, btw.

I know of someone who was told (by the tester) that if they had taken it at 3.11 vs 4 their child would have done much better.

The 4+ test has a different expectation of how long a child can sit and focus. You were not gaming the test - rather selecting the test that was age appropriate for your child.

Well, it depends when you took the test! If you did it in August, then yes it looks like gaming the system!

Last week, not as much..... In other words, was there time for you to have DS do the 4 year old test and get the results back and use the information in deciding which schools to apply? If the answer to this question is yes, then you may be thought of as attempting to game the system but this might only come into play if DS is a borderline candidate. If, by the time the playdate comes around, DS is clearly a smart and well behaved, respectful little boy, it will not matter.

I scheduled the test bcse I thought it would help us in the process of deciding to which schools he should apply. Also, with so much swine flu I just thought that I should get it over with rather than risk him getting sick and having to wait for his recovery. But I didn't put it together that it would basically be the last day in which he would be taking the younger test.

Unfortunately, it does look a bit like gaming the test. The schools do like to have the 4 year old test for the K applicants so it might hurt. If you are redshirting and applying for Pre-K, then you will need to explain redshirting which might be a bigger issue than the absence of the more appropriate test. The tester should prehaps have mentioned something to you and avoided this but there are lots of parents who do try to game the test. I do not know the answer to this, but call your tester, explain your discovery and ask if he can do the other components separately?????

Ques: who criticized for doing test on the last day??? a school.....or a 'friend'.

I wouldn't worry about it unless/until the schools you are applying to say something to you. If they want more information - they'll ask for it. Don't sweat it.

We're not redshirting him. He has a late bday and misses the cutoff. He's normal age for pre-K.

if you are applying for pre-K it is common for the applicants to have taken the WPPSI that goes up to 3.11 - if you were applying for K I would say it looked like you weer gaming the system.

Don't sweat it - the test is done and there is nothing you can do about it.

11.07 here. Then I would not at all worry. His scores will be compared against other kids who took the same test. Schools will likely not even notice!! Almost all the pre-K kids that are applying will have only done the test for 3 year olds. Good Luck!

Our child took the test at 3.11 because the tester said the test would be shorter if we did it before he turned 4. We never got the impression that ADs thought we were trying to game the system by having him tested at 3.11 than at 4.
