I always seem to have a problem buying the right size jeans, and now that I've lost a lot of weight, it's become even harder.
I have a small butt, and a not-so-small tummy area (not all of it is due to baby weight, I've always been this way). I buy jeans that seem to fit well in the store, but they end up being baggy in the butt after wearing them for a short amount of time. But, if I were to buy a size smaller, they would be way too tight on my tummy, and look awful. Do you buy them tight in the store, since all jeans seem to stretch out later? What to do? Are there any particular brands that would work for this shape? I am a size 12/14 right now, and don't want to spend a ton of money because I am continuing to lose weight. |

Most jeans now have a stretch fiber in them like Lycra so they will stretch. Anything above 3% will really stretch alot.
They should fit tightly when you try them on in the store. If they are too loose later on, throw them in the dryer for 5 minutes to help shrink them back. You should also be adjusting the legs before you sit down to avoid stretching them unnecessarily or stressing the fabric too much. I always suggest a professional jean fitting at someplace like the Denim Bar. If you can't do that, jeans should go to a tailor. The last thing people see if they don't fit correctly, is a "baggy butt." Not how we want to be remembered.

PP: good advice on throwing them in the dryer for a few minutes.
OP: try the Gap's Perfect Boot jean. I have a similar body type, and this jean is awesome. I also like the Real Straight. If you get these on sale, they are pretty affordable for someone who is losing weight. As for fit, I go for something that buttons comfortably (don't want a muffin top) in the store. I've heard good things about some jeans at Nordstrom's (Not Your Daughter's Jeans?), but have not tried them. |
| I have the Not Your Daughters Jeans, and while I was not thrilled to buy them, they have NOT lost their shape! Try them and try to ignore the label. |
| Unfortunately, buying jeans takes time and I've found it worthwhile to spend some time trying on many pairs to find the right cut and hip/waist ratio. If you have a good tailor, may be worth buying jeans that fit comfortably on the waist and taking in the hips. Saggy butt jeans look really awful. |
| you should buy them tight because usually they will stretch and become baggy |

These. I bought a pair to see how if it were really true. Your thread reminded me I need to go back and get a few more. |
Yikes. Those look like Mom Jeans to me. Or are they now called Obama Jeans? |
| That's a crappy picture of them. Theyre a mid rise so no muffin tops or me having fun trying to shove my post baby belly into them. |
| ..........and why would they be called Obama jeans? |

actually, a salesperson at gap told me that if you put stretchy jeans or pants in the dryer that ultimately it will make them more baggy, as it loosens up the fibers in the fabric. i don't understand the physics, i'm just telling you what i heard.
this happened to me recently with two pairs of pants (ordered from boden) and i am so disappointed. i really liked them when i first got them and now i can't wear them at all. what a waste of money! |
| Boden will take them back. Call and tell them and they'll email you a return code. I bought my son two pairs of pants that got holes after a couple wears and they refunded my $$ no questions asked. |

I had a "professional" fitting at Denim Bar after I had lost all my weight and felt like spending the money. I realize, OP, that you don't want to spend a ton of money, so I'll tell you what I learned.
1-Buy them TIGHT. Like, tighter than you want. They will stretch. 2-If you've got a muffin top, buy a higher rise. Mid rise is quite alright and doesn't look like a mom jean. MUCH better than a damn muffin top or your crack showing when you bend over to pick up your toddler. 3-If you're pear shaped (I am), the waist band should be touching (flat against) the middle of your back. Don't buy something with the intention of wearing a belt to make them stay up. If you're not proportioned properly buy a style that is tight on your thighs and butt and get the waistband taken in. However, this is a last resort. Try to find a contoured waistband. When you buy your expensive jeans, you WILL be able to find jeans with a contoured waistband. 4-Dry clean them. Yep, you heard me. Washing and drying destroys ALL your clothing, esp. denim. Hope this knowledge--gained over 2 hours and more than 62 pairs of jeans tried on--helps someone out there. |

I agree with most of what the PP said. Thank the good lord that the mid-rise has finally made its return, and the insanity is starting to stop. Some things are best left between you and your gynecologist.
But, I just bought two pairs of jeans last night, and how tight is tight supposed to be? I bought them as tight as I would be comfortable walking out of the store and into the street with them on. I was not willing to buy a pair that, while I was able to squeeze into them, looked a bit obscene to me. Dry clean? Really? Are you serious? Of course you are, I don't mean to belittle what you said. It's just that this takes time and money that I had never considered spending on jeans before. Finally, I am aghast that folks are willing to spend close (or upwards) of 200 bucks on jeans. Lucky Brand Jeans are fabulous as far as I am concerned, and you can get a pair for less than 100. I would love to get back into the Gap jeans I bought for 30 bucks 7 years ago, before anybody ever would have considered spending a dime more than that. |

Has anyone met a brand that doesn't stretch out? I buy them as tight as I can but then by noon they are sagging on the butt. The only ones that do not do that are a pair of Express I am wearing from before DD, but the rise is too low for my post-partum belly.
I ordered some mid-rises from Express today and two DKNY and a Calvin Klein from Macys in the hopes that I find at least one that I can wear without it stretching out. But if anyone knows of a brand under $100 that will not stretch out, I will be forever grateful. |
