Clomid 3-7 v. 5-9?

Anonymous
I have heard that the difference is that taking clomid on days 3-7 will give you more follicles, while days 5-9 may give fewer but they're "more mature" or somehow "better."

I just did my first cycle of clomid 100mg days 3-7 and one FSH inject and I wound up with 5 mature follicles and 5 more that were close. Of course the IUI was cancelled b/c of the high risk of multiples. Now I'm just waiting to start a new cycle.

I spoke to my doctor briefly and she said we need to adjust the meds next time (obviously!) but I'm wondering if I should ask her to start me on day 5 instead of day 3. I only want 2-3 good follicles for IUI; based on my response this time, it seems like maybe a later start for the clomid would be more appropriate? Or is it hard to say if I'm going down to 50mg from 100?

I heard that 3-7 was for women with a shorter natural cycle (~25 days) and 5 - 9 was for a longer natural cycle (~30+ days). I went to an RE who wasn't open Sundays, and adjusted the start date around the closed day on the weekend. I think these things are more art than science, and you need to rely on your doctor's approach.

I'm not sure which day is better but I think you bring up very good points. I would definitely mention these points to your RE during your next consult about your meds. I'm one who thinks that we need to be very proactive/aggressive when it comes to speaking with our drs so it can only help you to bring up your concerns before you go ahead with your next cycle. Good luck! I'm hoping the change in dose and/or medicine will be a good thing for you!
