I would appreciate your suggestions for a 3rd row SUV with AWD. The 3rd row will be used only occasionally for carpooling, etc., but I still want the captain's seats for easy access to the back row. We're already looking at the Honda Pilot but wondering if there's a cheaper option I'm missing. Thanks! |
We have a GMC Acadia with captains chairs and LOVE it. Have never had issues and it's my favorite!! We actually just bought a second one lol |
Capitans chairs and a third row or capitans chairs are the third row? |
Highlander, Enclave, Ford Flex, Santa Fe, Traverse, Acadia, Durango |
we had a Traverse and while it was roomy and easy to get in and out I did not love it. It was wide and hard to park. And something about it just seemed plastic-like to me.
we now have an x5 with a third row. it's smaller and there are no captains chairs in the second row. however you can move the entire middle seat forward at a right angle to access the third row. So you can keep a car seat fully attached and still move the second row forward. That might not be what you are looking for, but just putting it out there. I love the X5! |
Wow, the middle seat that moves sounds great! Unfortunately, I think the x5 is out of my budget. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. |
The Mazda CX-9 has a second row with seats that move forward for easy entry/exit. It also drives like a car. |
Subaru is coming out with a 7/8 seater SUV with a third row in 2018. https://www.caranddriver.com/features/the-2018-subaru-ascent-is-a-car-worth-waiting-for-feature

I’m on my second Highlander. I love it! |

This is me as well. Love it. Replaced 2011 with a 2016 earlier this year. Give it a whirl and also try the Traverse, which is the Chevrolet version. |

I spent a lot of time looking for higher end SUV with 2nd row captains seats. Very hard to find. Audi, Acura, Volvo, Lexus, etc. -- nothing. We ended up buying a nice, used (low mileage), one year old Highlander for about 39K. Good car, no complaints. Also, look at the new VW Atlas, which was released after we bought. I didn't like the feel of the Mazda or GMC/Buick products and thought the Highlander would hold its value longer. |
That’s a minivan. |
We have a Highlander. Like it very well. Has nice leather seating and a panoramic moon roof which has been really nice for the kids on longer road trips. We really liked the look and feel of the Mazda CX-9, but didn't like the bench middle row and wanted cooled front seats since we don't have a garage. Mazda only offers heated seats. Consumer Reports rates the Highlander very highly which was another factor. |
