| I put in the directions on my GPS and it sent me on the HOV EZ Pass lane on the highway. By the time I realized it, I couldn't get out of it. I came off at the first exit because I don't have a transponder on my car. Will I get a ticket? Is there anything to do to avoid getting in that lane in the future? |

Its not a ticket per se. You will get a bill for the amount of the toll plus an admin fee.
You dont say what road you were on but in the ICC I Think it amounts to a total of about $4.50. Pay it as soon as you get it. |
I think OP was on the HOT lanes along the Beltway in Virginia. OP, take the advice above. Watch for the bill in the mail and pay it immediately. As to avoiding in the future, those lanes are EZ Pass only, so if you don't want this to happen again, don't get in them. Or get an EZ Pass. I've had one for 20 years and can't imagine not having one. |
| OP pull your head out of your ass an pay attention to road signs, not your GPS. |
Not used to the highways around here so I was relying more heavily on my GPS than usual. Would love to be like you tho - must be awesome to be perfect. |
| EZ Pass in VA doesn't have a service fee - so I highly recommend getting a transponder even if you'll use it infrequently. Even better if you get the flex transponder so if you're HOV, you don't have to pay. |
| If a cop didn't stop you, you won't get a ticket. They will mail you a fine though for the use of the tolls. |
had this happen to me out in seattle, in a rental car. ugh. ended up being a $20 mistake on a $1 toll. no toll booths just the cameras and poor signage. suck it up and pay as soon as it gets in the mail. don't come back here in 6 months complaining about a $10,000 toll bill you wont get any sympathy
that being said though the marking on the 495 and 95 HOT lanes is pretty obvious, you must have been really focused on the GPS to miss the signage... |
Next time when using your GPS, select the option that says "avoid tolls" or however it's listed on your phone. This will keep you off any roads that require the transponder. |
| This happened to me before when I moved here. I hadn't bought my EZ pass yet and accidentally went on the Dulles till toad. Luckily I was planning to purchase one so when I explained the situation/ordered the pass they forgave the fine. Not sure if that is your situation but it worked out for me. |

Please don't wait for the bill. Here is a link for what to do to avoid larger fees:

| Go into the settings of your GPS and make sure it is set to "Avoid Tolls" so that this doesn't happen in the future and immediately pay your bill for the toll when it arrives! |
| Yes- what 16:29 said! Depending on the road you can pay less if you go online quickly and pay versus if you make them create and send you a bill. |

I had to drive through an exit toll both without paying once in Pennsylvania. I didn't have an EZ-PASS, and had my cash ready, then saw a lane with a sign that read "NO CASH". I thought, great, I'll save my cash and use my credit card! It turned out, that was not an option, I guess they meant EZ-PASS ONLY.
At any rate, I just got a bill in the mail, not a ticket or a fine. |
