Why so much sex abuse in PG county?

Anonymous
I am not sure if it's the media that skews so much attention to PG county schools, but over the last 3 days, all I have heard are sexual abuse, child porn, sexual assault and other allegations against PG county school teachers. What is going on? We are in VA and were considering moving to Maryland to lower taxes. This is an entire black eye on the system.

I dunno. Most of the news traffic I see about school personnel sex abuse of late has been in MoCo.

It actually happens all over the place but doesn't always make the news.

Does every serious car accident make the news?
Does every robbery or break-in make the news?
Does every missing child or battered spouse story make the news?

Of course not...UNLESS...

Unless the "big thing" people are talking about now are car accidents...then that's all you see on the news.
Unless the "big thing" people are talking about now are robberies and break-ins...then that's all you see on the news.
Unless the "big thing" people are talking about now are missing children or battered spouses...then that's all you see on the news.

This unfortunately happens everywhere. The last cycle seemed to hit the frou-frou private schools. Apparently, PG is currently in the crosshairs now.

PG has a lot of social problems. For the past 20 years, it's even had a more corrupt government than in DC.

It's covered up more with richer people.

And, if you have one of the lower paying, more challenging school systems, you might be scrapng the bottom of the barrell for new hires. (I know PG also has some good teachers too.)

Myth PG salaries are not lower then the overall area

Agreed. Like the teacher from FFX arrested yesterday for drinking and drugging with a student.

Myth someone with local pride knows what they are talking about and if you say it, it must be true!! Too bad these things have math and facts behind them that can be looked up

PG Isnt even close to being competitive. PG is rich for what it is but that is a low bar

You're talking salaries in general. The discussion is specifically about teacher salaries, where PG is about average:

This table is from 2013, but the relative salaries are still about the same:

Hit the paywall on the article but the chart you posted is just average salaries. what are the actual pay bands? Average salaries could be skewed by things like higher turnover or higher percentage of new teachers.

As a former PG teacher (left in July) and current MOCO teacher the chart is somewhat accurate however it seems to be based on the higher end of salaries with a Master's degree and years of experience which is what I'm currently in. You should see the average salary for a teacher with just a Bachelors. It is much lower.
