Preschool and Daycare Discussion
| My DC is starting school 2 days a week next week. I need to get a lunch box, labels, etc and this is all new so I was wondering if an experienced parent could tell me what has worked well. He can feed himself fairly well but some things are messy so I wasn't sure because it's weird to think I'm not there to make sure he eats! I will ask the teacher of course but what has worked well=I need to get labels too for his stuff |
|
Mabel's Labels is great, by the way.
Are they going to heat up food at all? Or is it all cold lunches? Things that work for my son: whole wheat pita pizza cut in quarters (reheats easily) turkey wraps with a little mayo or honey mustard, shredded lettuce regular sandwiches toasted pita chips and guac are a big hit (anything that involves dipping) and I always send one veggie and one fruit. my son will eat cooked veggies at room temp. and stuff like diced pears or applesauce. berries are a big hit now too. sometimes gold fish or the pretzel fish. sometimes fig newtons. |
| thank you-very helpful! They will heat things up so I think pizza is good since I know he likes that. I'll check out that label site. I found a few sites but they seemed pricey to me! |
Mabel's Labels is pricey, too, unfortunately. But I’ve been using them to label bottles, clothes, and shoes since DC was an infant and they hold up extremely well – to zillions of laundry loads, dishwashers, pools, you name it. |

Here are some things I pack: (I usually give my son 3 or 4 things)
Trader Joe's yogurt--little containers pasta/mac n cheese leftovers from night before dinner fresh fruit dried fruit Little Del Monte cans of peaches/pears from Costco Pizza bagels spinach nuggets (look like chicken nuggets) from Costco--I buy a big bag, keep in freezer, then put 3 or 4 in a lunch. tuna fish with or without bread veggies-raw brocc/cauliflower breakfast/fruit bar cheese and crackers, string cheese, etc. half-sandwich fish sticks scrambled eggs be creative--give a variety--stuff you know he likes. |
| 3 out of the 4 days my 2 year old goes to "school" she gets leftovers. If there are no leftovers she gets slices of ham and cheese, chicken nuggets or scrambled eggs...with fresh fruit and or veggie of course. |

| What veggies do you pack? |
| For the PP who packs guacamole. How do you keep it from turning brown? |
|
Meat/proteins:
Chicken nuggets Fish sticks Mini turkey meatballs Veggie burgers Morningstar "chicken" patties Cut up hotdog or turkey dog PP&J Veggies: Broccoli Baby carrots Green beans Peas Corn Fruits: Banana Peaches Pineapple Mandarin oranges Grapes All types of melon I always toss in a cheese stick or sometimes a Yoplait kids yogurt or applesauce. |
| PP here - I should have also mentioned that I give my kids pizza a lot and also different pasta shapes sprinkeled with parmesan cheese. |
It never has. ? I get the guac made by Whole Foods. I've had guac from Baja Fresh turn brown, but the stuff from Whole Foods doesn't. I don't know why. I do pack it in those tiny tupperware-like cups you can buy at grocery stores, so it doesn't have much air in it. Don't know if that's it. |
| identitydirect.com is also a good source for labels. |
| how do you pack scrambled eggs - to be eaten cold? |
| Why do you need to "get" labels. Buy a sharpie |
