Bar mitzvah gift?

| My son (13) is attending his first bar mitzvah, for one of his school friends. I gather money is the usual gift for a bar mitzvah. Anyone know what an appropriate amount would be from a friend? (we parents are not invited). |

A check for $18 or 36 with a nice card.
If your son is really close to the boy, make it a bigger check - any multiple of 18 is good. |

| My DD was invited alone to one and we got a $50 gift card. This was private school if that matters. Other families included the parents and I would assume they gave more. |
