transitioning from girls sizes to juniors - Where should we shop?

Anonymous
My 11yo DD has hit the size limit in many kids sizes, and I am not sure where to go from here. I can only handle so much clothing from Justice. Where else should I look for a girl who wears a girls 16 and what junior size should I start having her try on?

Try gap kids for size 16.
Take her shopping in places like American Eagle or Aeropostale and try a 00 or 0. H&M is a good store, but their sizing is tricky so everything will have to be tried on. As a matter of fact she may be able to fit some items now because the sizing is different. I wear a 0/1, but in H*m I wear a 6. Forever 21 is a good store with junior sized clothing also.

My DD is 13 - last school year she just bought her very first clothing item in the Women's section in Old Navy. XS flannel shirt.

Agree about trying the items on, especially bottoms. Girls' size 16 in most brands has a larger waist/hip (especially waist) measurement than the smallest size in a juniors or ladies, for example, a 27-inch waist for a girls' size 16 vs a 24-inch waist for a size double-zero. (In other words, the next size "up" might skip the smallest juniors' sizes.)

This is all very helpful. Thank you.

You can also try the juniors sizes in department stores like Nordstom or Macy's. H&M is also a good bet. American Eagle, Hollister, Abercrombie, and the like also come to mind depending on her style. As PPs said, just try on a couple sizes wherever you go. I personally would avoid Forever 21. The clothes there just do not last. Even the stuff from H&M outlasts Forever 21 by a huge margin.

We're also having good luck with higher sizes at Gap. DD was wearing Gap 16 pants and bought a few size 0 pants in Macy's juniors department that mostly fit but were still too big in the waist and hips since they were designed for a more mature body. (We did find that Macys Junior options were a good fit for fancy dresses when she needed one.) Gap sells through size 18--check online since there's not much in store in those sizes.

Kids that age don't want to wear Lands End

We have this exact issue. We try JC Penney for their juniors, Aeropostale, Gap, Under armour and have been successful.

Do tweens/teens still like Hollister? Abercrombie and Fitch?

I'm trying to buy a birthday present for my niece and I have no idea what's cool anymore I know her slightly older cousins have a lot of VS Pink shirts/sweatshirts but she's only 11 and I don't think her parents like her wearing Victoria Secret.

Old Navy, Gap, even the Junior section at Kohl's.
