Private & Independent Schools
| Which private schools are considered good in science in NW DC/ Chevy Chase/Bethesda area? Does any of the big ones emphasize science over other topics? Thanks. |
| Holton |
|
What grade level?
|
| OP. Grade 3 and up. Science does not need to be the main focus but I am looking for a school that is strong in math and science. |
| Yup, I've heard that Holton has one of the best reputations for science and math. Of course, that's not helpful if you have a boy. |

Maret Sheridan Green Acres
|
| Green Acres, hands down (only goes up to 8th) |
|
Depends on how serious you are about science. From a HS perspective, I'd say GDS and Sidwell, although I'd also point out that the local science powerhouses are public schools (TJ in VA and Montgomery Blair in MD).
GDS and Sidwell have both had Intel (formerly Westinghouse) Science Talent Search semi-finalists in recent years (Sidwell pretty regularly). Neither Holton nor Maret has. Both Sidwell and GDS have math classes beyond Calculus (Sidwell one year beyond; GDS two years). |
| Big differences between HS programs and really good science for 3-8. The best of each may not be in the same place. |
| Agreed. It would help though if people said *why* particular schools were good for science in grades 3-8. |
| for science, green acres for sure. curriculum starts in pre-k 2x a week and develops from there. emphasis on scientific inquiry. hypothesis>>test>>refinement of hypothesis>>test, test. great learning. real projects. they build bridges, test load. build hovercrafts. all kinds of cool stuff. it really engages the kids and particularly the creative ones. the curriculum develops a love and reverence for the outdoor world. starts in pre-k with digging up earthworms to feed the turtles. my son wants to be a scientist (and rock star) now, and that seems to reflect what's going on at green acres in the science curriculum. |
